The European recovery plan at 750 billion euros is well worth a real physical encounter, with of course strict observation of the rules of social distancing.
Thursday, Johannes Hahn, Budget Commissioner, or "budgetary engineer", as he likes to define himself, received a few journalists in a large and dark meeting room of a Commission deserted because of coronavirus. The man is not unhappy that the institution has finally closed and presented this huge file which required "several weeks of hard work". And which was modified until late Tuesday evening, the day before its presentation by Ursula von der Leyen. "All the figures had to fit together and there is always a risk of mistakes when you make changes at the last moment and many people work together," he admits, referring to the few inconsistencies observed.
