Hungarian opponents arrested by police for Facebook messages

OVERVIEW - Since last week, several Hungarian opponents who criticized the regime of Viktor Orban have been arrested. The police accuse them of spreading false information, an offense which is now punishable by five years in prison.

Last Tuesday, the police came to arrest a 64-year-old resident of the small town of Szerencs, in the north of the country. Reason: a criticism of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban published on Facebook: " You are a ruthless tyrant, but remember one thing: dictatorships have always ended up falling ". Even though he was released during the day, the police posted the tape of his arrest for no reason.

The next day, at six in the morning, it was János Csóka-Szucs' turn to be arrested in the eastern city of Gyula, also for a message posted on the Internet. On Facebook, in a private group of residents, he had informed of the release of hospital beds all over the country to receive patients with Covid-19 (which was true).
