George Floyd Death Protests Increase 0:38
(CNN) - The Dalai Lama deplored the death of George Floyd in Minnesota and blamed it on discrimination and racism.
The exiled Tibetan leader gave a virtual lesson on compassion to his followers during an Internet broadcast on Friday morning from his home in Dharamsala, India.
"We see on the news channels, the media, about discrimination based on color or religion these days, and then there are murders because of that, and then there are some who even pride themselves on being able to kill someone."
The Tibetan spiritual leader added: "Just yesterday I saw on the television news, somewhere in Minnesota or somewhere in the United States, a black person had fallen under a car, and the police team ... and in fact he He pressed his knee to that black person's neck. "
"So because of this discrimination, race-based racism is that such things happen," said the Dalai Lama.
The outrage has grown internationally after a video appeared showing a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on Floyd's neck during the arrest. Floyd was unarmed and handcuffed, saying he couldn't breathe before he died later.
The Dalai Lama's talk was part of a two-day training teaching on Avalokiteshvara, which is a compassion-centered practice, and which continues on Saturday. The spiritual leader gives these teachings quite frequently, which would normally happen in front of his followers and visitors, but that was discontinued after the worldwide outbreak of coronavirus.
