In Baden-Württemberg, wolf hybrids were freed from an illegal stance. The Foundation for Bears brought her to a conservation project. How it goes on.

  • Wolf *: Hybrids are a cross between a wolf and a domestic dog - they are counted as wolves
  • The Foundation for bears rescued two of wolf hybrids from a prison in Baden-Wuerttemberg
  • The foundation has now brought the Wolf hybrids from Baden-Württemberg to an animal protection project in
Baden-Württemberg - Two wolf hybrids were confiscated in Baden-Württemberg on Wednesday after five years in illegal private ownership . The animals have now arrived in the Thuringian animal protection project of the Foundation for Bears, said the foundation .

The confiscated animals are male and female. In the animal protection project in Leinefelde-Worbis, the wolf hybrids will spend their time getting used to - without visitors. The team made it possible to observe the animals with a camera system.

Wolf: According to the foundation, the two hybrids from Baden-Württemberg are not uncommon

The two four-legged friends, Ronja and Raik, feel comfortable in the thicket of their new home. However, the fate of the two animals is not uncommon. Up to the fifth generation, the cross between wolf and domestic dog are classified as wolves and can hardly be distinguished from them purely optically.

However, this is a massive threat to species protection and to the keepers. After all, wild animals are adapted for living in the great outdoors. "Anyone who supports the breeding of wolf hybrids does not know what they are doing to the animals. They are not allowed to live in nature and keeping them in the household like a dog is a terrible agony for them. So two things have to happen: The breeding of these animals has to be contained and in return there has to be enough space to accommodate the confiscated animals, ”says Bernd Nonnenmacher, Managing Director of Alternative Bärenpark GmbH.

Wolf: Hybrids like the one in Baden-Württemberg need more projects like the Foundation for Bears

If wolf hybrids occur in nature, they must be removed according to EU guidelines in order not to endanger the purity of the wolf species. Accommodation in animal protection facilities with extensive grounds and sufficient retreat options are the best possible alternative.

But there is a shortage of institutions and projects of the Foundation for Bears all over Europe.
