Covid-19: with nearly 28,000 dead, Brazil becomes the fifth most bereaved country

The South American giant now has 27,878 deaths from the new coronavirus according to the Ministry of Health, ahead of Spain.


The crisis is dangerously accelerating. After a new day with more than a thousand deaths (1,124 in 24 hours), and a record number of contaminations, with 26,928 in one day (bringing the total to 465,166 since the start of the pandemic), the Brazil became the fifth most bereaved country in the world this Friday by the new coronavirus.

In this macabre "ranking", the nations that have been most affected by Covid-19 are the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and France, a country that Brazil could quickly overtake since it counts about a thousand more dead. In number of cases, the South American giant is only surpassed by the United States, which has more than 1.7 million.

Figures may be underestimated

The fact remains that the nearly 28,000 deaths in Brazil reduced to the population, 131 per million inhabitants, is much lower than those of certain European countries, like the 580 per million inhabitants in Spain.

However, public health experts estimate the Brasilia government figures clearly underestimated, due to the lack of sufficient tests. And by the very admission of the Brazilian health authorities, "we cannot predict" when the country will have reached the peak of contamination.
