The election of the left-wing politician Borchardt to the state constitutional court in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has already caused a lot of criticism. With an interview, the newly appointed judge causes further trouble.
Berlin / Schwerin (dpa) - The criticism of the appointment of the left-wing politician Barbara Borchardt to the state constitutional court of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania does not stop.
The member of the Bundestag Norbert Röttgen, who wants to become CDU federal chairman, described the new judge in the magazine "Der Spiegel" as a "case for the protection of the constitution". At the same time, he criticized that his own party Borchardt had voted in the state parliament. The Union of Victims' Associations of Communist Tyranny called their appeal to the State Constitutional Court a "shame".
An interview with Borchardt in the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" caused new problems. In it, she said: "There were wall deaths on both sides, border soldiers were also shot." The chairman of the victims' associations, Dieter Dombrowski (CDU), told the editorial network in Germany (Saturday): "Anyone who mocks the victims of the dictatorship is out of place in a constitutional court."
Borchardt is a member of the "Anti-Capitalist Left" association within her party. This association is monitored by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Borchardt had been elected judge in the state parliament of Schwerin with a two-thirds majority - also by members of the SPD and CDU. Röttgen said: "Once and for all, the CDU must make it clear that it cannot be blackmailed in such cases. There must be no voice, no support and no cooperation with extremes of any streak."
