Graefelfing - One of the most beautiful avenues in the Würmtal is now even more beautiful. The municipality of Gräfelfing will open Tassilostraße to traffic next Wednesday after three months of renovation. The work was tough.

The approximately 450 meter long Tassilostrasse has special features. Over 100 years old maple and sycamore trees line the road on the right and left and unite over the road to the canopy. There have never been paved sidewalks with curbs. At the request of the residents, it stayed that way.

Planted in 1907

The planners and the construction company also had to overcome enough hurdles. The main concern was the protection of the maple trees planted in 1907. Because they are close to the road, there was a fear that they would suffer fatal damage to the roots when excavated. From the beginning, tree expert Erk Brudi accompanied the work. A special suction dredger was used to gently uncover the roots. Fortunately, it turned out that the trees are rooted mainly in the rows of houses. So only four trees had to be cut thicker roots. Three of them failed the subsequent tensile test for stability and must now be slightly thinned in the crown. Additional plantings are planned for the existing gaps in autumn.

The new roadway now has a drainage channel, but it is interrupted periodically to supply part of the surface water to the trees.

Fortunately, another fear was not entirely fulfilled. Trial drilling had predicted massive tar loads. Ultimately, they turned out to be less; nevertheless, the removal of the material cost a six-figure sum. Overall, the renovation comes to around 1 million euros.

Graefelfing is investing 6 million euros in road renovation this year.
