Pentecost holidays will be spent at home because of Corona. With rising temperatures, the bathing lakes should become the focus of holidaymakers. The health department gives the green light, but a community has a bigger problem.

Weilheim-Schongau - The Weilheim-Schongau health department has good news for everyone who wants to cool off in water. The bathing water quality in the region "is - as in previous years - constant at a high level", the authority said in a message. The staff examined 30 "EU bathing spots" in the past week. Checks are regularly carried out on these special waters in accordance with the requirements of the Bavarian Bathing Water Ordinance - once a month from April to September. The latest results have been online recently.

Almost all of the 30 bathing places had been rated "excellent" in recent years. The bathing water quality of the Koppenberg pond in Habach and the Schwaigsee near Wildsteig were rated "good" in 2019 - this is still the second highest level. The health department also lists 17 other bathing waters that do not fall into the EU category. These include the Lechbad near Ursprung, the Deutensee near Peiting, the Gallaweiher near Bernried and the Schillersberger Weiher near Antdorf. The verdict for these places was consistently: "Bacteriologically unobjectionable".

Bathing lakes: Iffeldorf fears toilet problem

With regard to the corona pandemic, the office points out that visiting the bathing lakes "is no longer a problem legally, as long as the applicable distance rules are observed". The basic prerequisites, however, are that "group formation is avoided and a distance of at least 1.5 meters, better a significantly greater distance from other sun worshipers is maintained". Celebrating and grilling is "currently prohibited, regardless of the people present". In any case, celebrations are prohibited at individual bathing areas.

The city of Weilheim recently repaired five footbridges on Dietlhofer See and spent around 130,000 euros on them. Sunbathing and bathing on the "Dietschi" has been permitted again since the beginning of May, however the city expressly draws attention to "the general protective and hygienic measures". There is also a sign on each jetty that reminds you that you are using it at your own risk and not supervising the bathing area. On top of that, the following applies: "Jumping of jetties and stairways is expressly prohibited."

Bathing lakes: the city of Weilheim had jetties renovated

A special feature is the current corona location in Iffeldorf . "We have a problem with providing sufficient toilet capacity," said Mayor Hans Lang. At the large bathing area at Fohnsee, it was previously possible for visitors to use the toilets at the campsite. "The operating family was so generous," says Lang. However, if it is not clear which requirements a campsite has to meet to operate shower and toilet facilities, "then we have to make advance payments," says Lang. This means that the municipality would then have to set up appropriate systems, "ideally with a sewer connection". However, that costs a lot of money, the town hall chief says. Leaving the bathing area without a toilet facility "is not possible," says Lang. In any case, he wants to get in touch with the campsite operators again soon. If it works that the toilets can be used there again, "we have one less problem".

Swimming lakes: construction site in Wildsteig is completed

The Iffeldorfer have already experienced in the past few weeks what "vacation at home" can mean. The Easter lakes are the destination of day trippers - who sometimes come in large numbers. "We expect that there will be even more people this year," says Lang. You want to watch the upcoming Pentecost weekend and then - if necessary - "react at short notice". It is not just about bathers. According to Lang, the distance requirement means that those seeking relaxation can switch to sensitive nature conservation areas. Of 24 Easter lakes, 19 are in the nature reserve, which covers a total of almost eleven square kilometers. Some municipalities have not yet focused on the "bathing season".

A major renovation has just been completed on the Schwaigsee in Wildsteig . The traffic jam safety on the dam has been restored. The lake is filled again, as Mayor Josef Taffertshofer says on request. In addition, a new walkway was built. The area was “significantly upgraded,” says the mayor. I haven't given any thought to bathers regarding Corona, ”says Taffertshofer. The lake is classified as a natural pool and is not an outdoor pool in which the municipality has a possible duty of supervision. When visiting "everyone is responsible for themselves". This also applies to compliance with the distance rules.

The same can be seen in the town hall in Hohenpeißenberg . To date, it has been mainly walkers at the Stiefelweiher. At the playground there is a sign indicating the distance rules. The bathing operation itself for this season has not yet been an issue in the administration, so managing director Gudrun Schuster on request. So far there has been no contact with the kiosk operator because of an opening. A note on the kiosk indicates an opening "from June in good weather".
