Madonna tribute to George Floyd raises criticism 1:00

(CNN) - Amid widespread outrage over the death of Minneapolis security guard George Floyd, Madonna is under attack after misstepping on social media.

As anger grew over images showing a police officer kneeling on Floyd's neck as he died, the singer tweeted on Thursday a two-minute video of her son, David Banda, dancing to the Michael Jackson song "They Don ' t Care About Us ” .

Madonna wrote in the caption: “Brutal murder travels the world, my son David dances to honor and pay tribute to George and his family and to all the acts of racism and discrimination that occur daily in the United States. #Davidbanda #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd #MichaelJackson “.

But the successful singer was teased by several commentators over an insensitive response to the story, which has sparked protests in several major cities in the country.

"No one asked Madonna to come in today. Not a soul. Unforced errors by public figures have been rampant this month, ”wrote April Reign, the creator of the #OscarsSoWhite campaign .

Television writer Akilah Green added that the video was "worse than Pepsi's", referring to an infamous 2017 commercial starring Kendall Jenner who used footage from a protest to sell the soda.

Several other commentators mockingly thanked Madonna for "ending racism."

Video footage of Floyd's death has sparked a more painful conversation about the use of force by the US Police against blacks and led to the firing of Police Officer Derek Chauvin. Protesters have asked the officers involved to face criminal charges and protests erupted in several cities on Thursday night.

It is not the first time that Madonna has been criticized for making an inappropriate comment in recent weeks.

In March, the singer told her followers that the covid-19 is "the great equalizer" while enjoying a milk bath with rose petals.

CNN has reached out to Madonna's representatives for comment on the situation.
