Dietzenbach / Hessen: 50 attackers from "problem areas" attack police - act of revenge possible

Update of May 29, 5:34 p.m .:  The background of the attacks on police officers, fire and rescue workers in Dietzenbach in Hesse is still unclear, but an act of revenge seems possible ( see update at 2:21 p.m. ). The scene of the crime, a dreary string of huge gray building complexes, is said to have repeatedly attracted negative attention in the past. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the district was once considered a "problematic social hotspot."

Currently, more than 3,200 people from around 80 nations are said to live in the apartment blocks, including many socially disadvantaged families with low incomes.

As op-online.de * reports, the insidious attack on social work ultimately harmed the district. First city councilor and social councilor Dr. Dieter Lang was "deeply affected because what has been built up and successfully implemented through social work, integration work and neighborhood management in recent years has been damaged".

Oliver Quilling , District Administrator of Offenbach, has strongly condemned the act: "Attacks on police officers and firefighters are completely unacceptable," the CDU politician is quoted in a press release.

Dietzenbach / Hessen: Attack on police officers an act of revenge?

Update from May 29, 2:21 p.m .: Was the  50-man attack on police officers in Hesse an act of revenge for a previous large-scale police operation? At the beginning of the week, officials had secured more than  200 bicycles , presumably  stolen goods, in several  basements of a high-rise building in  Dietzenbach

"It is not entirely out of the question that there is ultimately a connection to crimes that have previously been committed and where there has been a corresponding police action," said Hesse's Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) on Friday in Wiesbaden. Details would have to be determined first. There is no evidence of a political background to the attacks.

Violence against police officers: "We have been watching this for a long time"

According to the police union, ambushes against emergency services are not an isolated case. "We have been observing this for a long time," said the Hessian union chairman, Andreas Grün , on Friday at the dpa

However, it is not common for a group of around 50 attackers to attack officials. According to Grün, too, the intention was to massively attack the officials. "That was prepared." It was lucky that nobody was hurt.
