The hotels are allowed to open again. But what does the vacation during Corona look like? The boss of the Arabella Alpenhotel on Spitzingsee explains this in an interview.

District - Vacation in the hotel: From this Saturday it is possible again. Just in time for the start of the Pentecost holidays, the Arabella Alpenhotel on Spitzingsee also ends its mandatory corona break and can welcome guests again. In an interview, we asked Director Peter Könekamp how the hotel has prepared for the restart, what the holidaymakers can expect and what restrictions they can still expect despite the easing.

Mr. Könekamp, what is the Pentecost holiday like at the Arabella Alpenhotel on Spitzingsee?

Peter Könekamp: Definitely different from last year. The health of our guests and employees is our top priority. And yet everyone should be able to enjoy their stay with us. In order to be able to manage this balancing act, we have developed a sophisticated concept in the hotel in recent weeks to maintain hygiene protection and distance.

How much will the guests notice?

Peter Könekamp: Quite   a bit. It starts with the check-in. Both our employees and guests are obliged to wear masks in the public areas of the hotel. The welcoming smile at the reception will only be read from the eyes. However, there will be no lack of warmth. We are all very happy that we can finally welcome guests again.

How big is the rush to the rooms?

Peter Könekamp:   Immediately after the opening date was announced, the bookings started again. At Pentecost weekend, we're almost 70 percent full. Although there is no upper limit for bed occupancy in Bavaria, we have decided to gradually return to normal operation. Already in June we have the first two days with full occupancy. It is a challenge to keep the distances in the common areas, especially in the catering trade.

Are you expecting long lines at the breakfast or salad buffet?

Peter Könekamp:   No. For one simple reason: there will be no buffets until further notice. In order to still be able to offer the complete range of dishes, we have greatly expanded our a la carte service. The guests put together their dream breakfast and we bring it safely to their table under a glass bell. The buffet is in a way in the kitchen.

Nevertheless, the guests must not get too close when eating.

Peter Könekamp:   We benefit from the fact that we have several restaurants and can also use the terrace when the weather is nice. On the days of full occupancy, however, we will offer two meal times for our half-board guests: at 6 and 8 p.m. You can also take a nightcap at the bar, but only until 10 p.m.

The culinary arts are one thing. But what about the leisure options in the hotel?

Peter Könekamp:   There are still the biggest restrictions here. Our indoor pool and sauna area will remain closed, and the gym will be back in operation on June 8th. However, we can open the meadow by the lake immediately. We set up the couches so that a distance of two meters is guaranteed.

So you can only take a bath in the room?

Peter Könekamp:   (laughs) Or in the lake. But you shouldn't have a problem with refreshing temperatures - or bring a wetsuit. Seriously, sunbathing at Spitzingsee is also very relaxing.

How relaxed is your staff after the long break?

Peter Könekamp:   Everyone is healthy, motivated and happy that after overtime cuts and short-time work, things really get going again. Every employee has undergone hygiene training. Regardless of whether it is about instructing the guests in the restaurants or disinfecting them when cleaning the rooms: there are a lot of new things to consider in every department. However, we are ready to accept and master the challenges. Just like we did during the closure.

Was there so much to do?

Peter Könekamp:   Yes. We used the time for extensive repair work. From painters to exchanging wash basins. All of this can be made much easier when the house is empty.

When will it be completely full again?

Peter Könekamp:   With us only when conferences and large events are possible again. There is currently no appointment. For example, this year all weddings were canceled and postponed to 2021. Then at the latest it should be really buzzing again with us.
