Corona crisis: A study now shows that the solidarity of Germans is not far off. Two clear differences in particular give cause for concern.

  • Strict measures * are taken worldwide against the spread of the coronavirus * .
  • The rules of lockdown in Europe * were initially based on solidarity .
  • New forms of support appeared in many places - but a survey now shows that this phenomenon is crumbling.
  • Here you will find the basic facts about the corona virus * and the corona news from Germany. We also offer you the current number of cases in Germany * on a map. The following recommendations for corona protective measures are currently available . *

Erlangen - Germany was in an exceptional situation during the strict contact restrictions  .  Fears and difficulties were often alleviated by spontaneous actions by neighbors, friends or family.

The wave of solidarity was at its greatest around Easter . Creative, individual campaigns showed people around the world how easy it is to stand together. Nuns in Poland helped out in nursing homes, Parisian star chefs delivered food to the healthcare system , as the following video shows:

And not only individual actions showed it - the mood also seemed to reflect solidarity for the measures. But the economist Matthias Fifka says: "The solidarity that has often been invoked has dissolved fairly quickly". At the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg, he carried out a study from which the Süddeutsche Zeitung cited in advance.

Coronavirus crisis: Solidarity study shows differences between age and income groups

In the representative survey on May 18 and 19, people were asked what they thought about how to deal with the current crisis and what they wanted for possible future epidemics .

"For many people, the attitude shows that everyone is next to themselves," is the conclusion of study leader Fifka. The results would have shown that everyone approves of the measures that do the least harm to their own group. The differences ran mainly along two lines:

  • About 80 percent of those aged 60 and over find that all other values for the protection of life should be subordinated - the younger ones only 57 percent
  • Around 74 percent of people with a net household income of over 3,000 euros are in favor of everything else being subordinated to the protection of life - only 64 percent of people with lower incomes.

In contrast to age and income , regional or gender differences did not seem to play a role, according to the survey.

Coronavirus crisis: Germans want a different approach to future epidemics

For future epidemics, the participants particularly want the following:

  • A better preparation , such as an enhanced protective mask production
  • A better coordination and legitimacy of measures
  • A restriction of rights only with previously defined parameters
  • The need for parliaments approval
  • Taking the damage into account

Since the coronavirus crisis is likely to keep us busy until next winter, solidarity across groups will continue to play an important role. The role of so-called super spreaders is currently viewed as decisive for the fight against coronavirus - this gives many hope.

Angela Merkel also promoted in her video podcast to respect the protection needs of others:

On the weekend of Pentecost, numerous demonstrations against the measures were again announced - including a car parade by TV chef Attila Hildmann in Berlin.
