High street hammer: There is no outcry

It starts at Pentecost: Then the busy Hochstrasse in Mittenwald is to be converted into a pedestrian zone on a trial basis.

Mittenwald - quick shot, madness, brainstorm, stroke of genius - the range of approval and rejection is multifaceted. Everything else will show in practice. And that starts with the start of Pentecost vacation - so immediately. Of course we are talking about the complete blockage of the elevated road. The market town council Mittenwald decided on Tuesday after a memorable debate with 11:10 votes.

The anger of the people has not yet broken through the town hall. "There was various feedback, all factual," said Mayor Enrico Corongiu (SPD). In addition to the free voters and the citizens' association, this was overruled by its own red faction. Now Corongiu and the market administrations have to carry out the vote. The high road is to be closed to traffic from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. by 30 June. Then you can see further.

"A joke"

Once again, the town hall chief assured that the debate about this was due to the current corona situation and the associated concerns of the innkeepers. "If the complete closure had been our intention, we would certainly have started it differently." Say: The affected residents of the future alternative routes (Lauterseefeld, Gries, Goethestrasse and Anger) would have been informed at an early stage. This is how many of them learned the Hochstrasse hammer from their home newspaper. For example, ex-councilor and landlord Adolf Merk. "A joke," rumbles the retired police officer from Goethestrasse. "Pulling something like this out of your pocket is ridiculous." Merk does not want to take this Ratzfatz vote inactive and promises "very strong tinder". What the former municipal council of the now dissolved civil union does not understand at all is the permanent ignoring of a traffic master plan for the center of the town from 1992. The central message that applies to Merk then and now is: Blockage of the arterial road will be strict declined. This report should finally be carried out, complains Merk, and should not be put to waste in the drawer.

CSU goes on the offensive

In the meantime, the CSU, which did not find a majority with its one-way regulation despite the mayor's vote, has spoken out via online comments. With regard to the conversion of the bottleneck Hochstrasse, she speaks of an "unreasonable traffic situation for the residents Lauterseefeld, Goethestrasse, Anger and Gries". The former mayor party also sees other companies being treated differently. "Are further road closings to be expected if other restaurateurs also want to sit on the grounds of the community?" The CSU asks provocatively. With this “unthinkable action” the citizens are presented with “perfect facts”. And finally there is a broadside for political competition: The initiative "clearly shows how far it is with the SPD, the free voters and the citizens' association with the often required transparency!"

But there are other voices. Gröblalm landlord Josef Leuthner junior has “no problem” with the elevated road solution, but speaks of “an unfortunate time”. Because at the moment his inn can only be targeted from Mittenwald via the Anger and Lauterseefeld due to the closure on the Gsteig. Michael Oswald (Haus Rixner / Laintalstraße) thinks. "I think it's not bad." The closure of the elevated road should be maintained at least in the high season.
