The clash between President Trump and his favorite social network, Twitter, was almost unknown in advance. Trump tweeted what he thought, without masks, not even during Corona, without refining his words and regardless of timing and audience. The president of the world's greatest power does not filter. He employs, dismisses, scolds or praises people and groups on Twitter. In many ways, it has only helped the social network: its name is mentioned daily in the news releases with a new tweet from the White House.
Twitter, for the most part, played the game played by other social networks nowadays. They are protected from claims about the content they upload, and in return - they do not interfere with them. This balance gives them a special status: they are not media, but a free platform for ideas.
But this week, Twitter decided to break it. This began when he attached a label of unreliable and inaccurate information to Trump's tweets, and he remained indebted. Shortly thereafter, he announced his intention to revoke the protection against claims enjoyed by the networks. The network did not fold. vice versa. The blue bird became an eagle, and decided to label one of the president's tweets as a promoter of violence.
Facebook, as opposed to Twitter, chose not to interfere in the war. Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company would continue its policy of non-interference with content uploaded to the network, except in exceptional cases.
It's too early to predict how this war will end, but one thing is certain: Twitter has chosen a side. Of millions of inaccurate tweets and many more that encourage violence, the chain has chosen to label only Trump's tweets as such. Tweets by Iranian President Khamenei or Hamas, including those calling for the destruction of the State of Israel, remained intact. No wonder there are many who see this as a blatant intervention by a company that has a major influence on discourse and public opinion in the upcoming US elections. Twitter is a private company and allowed to choose a party, but also allowed to demand transparency.
It's time for Twitter and its counterparts to choose between two choices; They are a media body or a free stage, if they are a media body, they should be responsible for all content uploaded to them and should be exposed to claims and responsibilities when incitement and other crimes are committed, if they are free, as I personally think they should be. Exposed to claims due to statements made by individuals above their deaths, but to the same extent they must not restrict or remove statements, even the most outrageous or problematic - as long as they are not significant cases of concern for human life.
At the moment, her hands seem to be capturing her blue bird in her cage. She couldn't get out.
Release the bird, Twitter
