He reports to Gerhard Schröder via podcast. Angela Merkel will not complain about his praise - the former chancellor is angry with a diplomat.

  • Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder breaks new ground in communication .
  • He starts his own podcast "The Agenda" .
  • A politician gets it especially in the first episode (see update May 27).
  • Schröder's wife, meanwhile, delights with unprecedented insights into the private life of the former chancellor.

Update May 30, 2020: With praise for Chancellor Angela Merkel and Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder , former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder actually opened his new podcast rather controversially - but at least one man apparently angered the statements:  Andrij Melnyk , the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany. The former politician had dubbed it the “dwarf from Ukraine”, the criticism of which does not interest anyone.

The contempt countered on Saturday. "Mr. Schröder will go down in world history as a cynical Kremlin lobbyist in Germany, who downplayed Putin's aggressive policies and shamelessly praised Russia's war crimes in Eastern Ukraine and Crimea," Melnyk told the dpa in an interview.

Schröder, who was chancellor from 1998 to 2005, is today the chairman of the supervisory board of the Russian oil giant Rosneft . The group is affected by EU sanctions that were imposed in 2014 due to the Ukraine conflict. "We Ukrainians feel nothing but pity for Mr. Schröder," said Melnyk. “These repeated calls are an act of pure despair. Because all of Schröder's many years of efforts to have the sanctions relaxed in Berlin have been and will remain in vain. "

Melnyk was also indignant about the designation as a "dwarf". “Mr. Schröder tries to play a cool Elder Statesman, but loses more and more ground under his feet. And the nerves. Describing a diplomat as a dwarf is a humiliation especially for the state he is allowed to represent and for his nation. ”

Meanwhile, in and around the Chancellery, the controversy about corona measures continues.

Former Chancellor Schröder regrets something in the Corona crisis: "If the Chancellor had called me ..."

Update May 28, 2020: Gerhard Schröder ruled as Chancellor in Berlin for seven years before he was sent into early political retirement by his successor Angela Merkel . But even 15 years after leaving the Federal Chancellery, politics never let go of him completely, as can be seen, among other things, from his new podcast "The Agenda", in which he talks, among other things, about Angela Merkel and her handling of the corona crisis has expressed (see update May 27, 2020).

Schröder's wife So-yeon Schröder-Kim , with whom he has been married since 2018, now gives Instagram a very private insight into the everyday life of the former Federal Chancellor . Gerhard Schröder has never been seen like this. "He is still sovereign, but at home on the frying pan," Schröder-Kim writes about a picture that shows her husband at home. In a second picture, Schröder presents his wife with a bouquet of flowers he has picked himself, and in another snapshot, Schröder-Kim cuts the hair of the obviously not enthusiastic former Chancellor Corona at home. Insights into Gerhard Schröder's private life that you probably never had before. Schröder-Kim's followers seem to like them though.

"If the Chancellor had called me ..." - Schröder knew one thing better in the Corona crisis

Update May 27, 2020: A sentence in Gerhard Schröder's podcast is particularly noteworthy in view of the latest federal policy developments between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Ministers *. If one wants to interpret it negatively, one could accuse Schröder of being a know-it-all. Perhaps it is actually meant as the benevolent "Elder Statesman" council of the former chancellor to his successor, who, however, now has far more years in office than he himself has achieved.

In his first episode of the podcast, Schröder initially praised the work of the Chancellor and the entire federal government in the Corona crisis. Merkel did a "good job, you can't deny it" . But Schröder would not be Schröder if there were not at least one restriction. The fact that Merkel occasionally tried to implement a “basta” policy against the prime ministers during the Corona crisis could not work. "If she had called me, I would have said: Just stay careful! Kohl used to call them wren, but they can occasionally bite. ”

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder praises Söder - he has advice for him on the Chancellor question

First report, May 26, 2020: Hanover - Where German politicians have so far mostly spoken on social media via Twitter or video messages, one dares to take the next step: Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) now has his own podcast “Die Agenda ”. On Tuesday (May 26th) the first episode started on Spotify and Apple Podcasts . Another seven episodes follow every Tuesday.

Gerhard Schröder in the first podcast episode: Between private and politics

The setting of the podcast: Schröder's former government spokesman Béla Andra will question the former chancellor with water or tea in his law firm in Hanover. The first episode focuses - how could it be otherwise - on the current corona crisis . The two alternate between private and Schröder's view of the current political work of his successors.

As soon as Gerhard # Schröder does a #Podcast, it looks as if he is running again as a # Federal Chancellor: just joy and positive comments! Incidentally, produced by # ABC-Communication

- Bela Anda (@ BelaAnda1) May 24, 2020

The podcast duo starts the first episode with a soft start. Andra wants to know how Gerhard Schröder experienced the eight-week lockdown * - which resembled a situation that has not existed since the Second World War. Schröder as a private person felt that this time was "less dramatic". A little more exercise would not have hurt and he regretted that his favorite sports, golf and tennis, were not possible - the minimum distance could have been maintained qua natura. In this matter, one could have "differentiated" more, said the 76-year-old. All in all, however, he didn't miss much. He also "behaved like everyone else" with his wife, who had recently spoken out a spicy marriage detail, without claiming any privileges .

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in the first podcast episode: "That was an error"

Differentiation seems to him to be an important keyword not only in relation to his sports. He now sees it positively in the political context. Contrary to his early statement " Federalism might come to an end", Schröder admits to himself and the public: "That was a mistake ."

Right now you can see that this organizational principle pays off when it comes to the procedure in the corona crisis. "There are differentiations in one or the other country depending on the level of infection, " observed the former chancellor, noting that with regard to states such as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which are less affected by infections than, for example, Bavaria: "Why can't we say then, we can rather to take a risk".

Schröder praises the German government in a podcast - and talks about “idiots” at Corona demos

Before the conversation comes to the big question of how things will go with Corona in Germany, Schröder has a few words of praise for the status quo. "I am actually not responsible for the praise of the Federal Government", nevertheless: "Germany has done well in everything. The Federal Government, too, ”is his conclusion so far, if you compare it on a European scale. At times, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) was too fixated on the black zero, which "was exported by the Union to a sacred number". But when it was necessary, the party colleague broke away, said Schröder. There was also nothing to complain about when dealing with short-time work benefits * in relation to Federal Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) .

But not only the politicians, according to Schröder, did well. His impression was: "The Germans were very disciplined" when it came to compliance with the Corona measures * . Nevertheless, he also knows that " there were always idiots in this world" and means conspiracy theorists who are currently sprouting up and gathering for demonstrations. For him, this is clearly based on “helpless coping with fear and sometimes idiotic calculations to make politics”, says Schröder. He sees particular danger in social media , which can now be seen to be “anything but social”. Because "if they can fool around completely uncontrollably," the former chancellor knows, "then that is already a threat to the democratic substance ."

Gerhard Schröder makes a podcast against Trump: "He doesn't seem to have got it"

Andra and Schröder finally turn their eyes outside of Germany and also from Europe. The focus is on the United States , but especially the approach of the American President Donald Trump * . Schröder sees his attack against the World Health Organization (WHO) as "catastrophic, what he does there" . "Weakening the WHO means letting Africa down," says Schröder, and finally makes a harsh statement against Trump: "He doesn't seem to have understood that. He doesn't understand much anyway, apart from business, ”says Schröder's assessment.

Corona crisis: former Chancellor Schröder talks about Söder in podcast

He sees the work of the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) differently . "He does it very professionally" and is downright what is called a "political animal". However, he then reports doubts to Andra's question "Can he be Chancellor?" " Berlin is a damn hard place," says the former chancellor, "and anyone who has won over the countries is far from being king in Berlin." With this wording, the end of the first episode of the podcast heralds after half an hour. So Schröder can talk and entertain, that is certain after the premiere.

The virologist Hendrik Streeck does not expect a second wave of infection, but also wins no reason for the all-clear.

Markus Söder is asked about the end of the mask requirement - his answer is extremely negative.

The corona hotspot Ischgl has a major impact on the infection rate in Germany - this is the conclusion of a study.
