Chile passed Sunday, May 31, the milestone of 1,000 deaths from Covid-19 and 100,000 contaminations with the new coronavirus, according to the latest official figures.
In the past 24 hours, 4,830 new cases of coronavirus have been officially registered in this country of 18 million inhabitants as well as 57 additional deaths, a daily record, announced the Ministry of Health. In total, since the appearance of the first Covid-19 case in Chile on March 3, 99,688 people have contracted this disease, of which 1,054 have lost their lives.

Most of the patients who have died are elderly people suffering from other pathologies, but the authorities recently pointed out that half of those infected in recent weeks were under 40 years of age and accounted for 12% of hospitalizations.

As of Friday, more than 80% of the contamination was concentrated in the capital of Santiago alone, which has seven million inhabitants.
Latin America has become the main breeding ground for the new coronavirus.
