(CNN Spanish) - In Nicaragua on May 30, the second anniversary of a march in support of the Mothers of April was commemorated, in which 19 young people died in an armed attack by alleged parapolicies. Paulo Abrau, executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, through a video released on his social networks, recalled the event.


“Two years ago a march occurred in Nicaragua, with a call considered historic in terms of its massiveness. In the context of this demonstration, at least 19 people died and thanks to the joint work of Nicaraguan civil society organizations, these victims are not and will not be forgotten. The commission continues to work exhaustively on the situation in Nicaragua, despite having been expelled from the country since December 2018. ”

Antonia Urrejola, Vice President of the IACHR and Rapporteur for Nicaragua, expressed in a video released this Saturday: “I want to send a hug to all those mothers who, despite their heartbreaking pain, have not stopped for a single day for their fight for the justice, truth, memory, and reparation ”.

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed on her Twitter account this May 30: “Two years after the March of the Mothers, one of the days with the most fatalities in the 2018 protests, the office expresses its solidarity with the Mothers of April and with all the victims of human rights violations. ”

The Mothers of April Association, an organization made up of relatives of fatal victims of the anti-government protests that began in 2018, carried out a virtual tribute to their deceased relatives on Saturday May 30, 2018, and to demand justice on Saturday. This year, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, he did not organize mass or public events to prevent infections.

The Government of Nicaragua, through the Police, reported that on May 30, 2018, a group of people attacked participants in a cantata in honor of the mothers, and the incident left several police officers injured.
