Spanish government president Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that he would ask parliament to extend the confinement by two weeks until June 21 to end the coronavirus epidemic " once and for all " before lifting movement restrictions imposed on compatriots.

Sanchez made the announcement during a videoconference with regional presidents, adding that it would be the last extension given the improvement in the health situation. " We have practically finished what we had to do, " the head of government said later during a press conference. Spain reported only four new deaths on Saturday, bringing the death toll to 27,125 since the start of the epidemic.

The right opposition is opposed to the extension of the confinement but Sanchez should be able to rely on a majority in the Cortes thanks to the abstention of the Catalan separatists from the ERC. If the Parliament approves Sanchez's decision, the Spanish will be allowed to circulate within their region of residence from June 21, then throughout the country from July 1.
