López Obrador: Mexico needs to normalize its activities

(CNN Spanish) - The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, insisted on Monday on the need for the country to resume productive life after the end of the National Sana Distance Day, an official strategy announced March 23 to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We need to gradually normalize productive, social, economic, cultural activities, I repeat, carefully, that we leave if it is essential activities, but that we take care of ourselves," said the Mexican president from Isla Mujeres, in Quintana Roo, the first state that it chose to start a tour of the southeast of the country after the start towards what it called the “new normal”, a stage in which the construction, mining and automotive sectors will begin their activities.

The Mexican president also assured that after a year and a half in power his government continues to move towards transformation, so he announced that this Monday he will start the construction of the Maya Train, one of the works of flagship infrastructure of your government and that, according to the authorities, will generate employment in that part of the country.

It is a railway project that will connect the main tourist areas in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, and will offer tourist and freight transport services.

López Obrador also announced the resumption of tourist activities in Quintana Roo, a state that, according to local health authorities, has reported a decrease in the number of positive cases of covid-19 and where the Cancun resort is located, one of the most famous in the Mexican Caribbean, visited annually by millions of foreign tourists.

"Here we are going to start this tour because according to the decision made by the government of the State of Quintana Roo, all the health protocols are going to start preparing this week, so that next week the tourist activity with the care is required, so today is an important day in the process of normalization of public life in Mexico, "said the president.

However, the Mexican president indicated that if the start of productive activities causes a regrowth, the containment measures would be applied again.

"If we leave our houses only for what is essential, if we respect the necessary measures, then little by little we will return to normality," said the president.
