Augsburg - The diocese of Augsburg pays up to 75,000 euros for victims of sexual abuse . The diocese announced on Tuesday. The appointed Bishop Bertram Meier signed a "Recognition and Support Regulations of the Diocese of Augsburg for those affected by sexual abuse or physical violence in a church context". The bishopric thus precedes a planned, common regulation of the Catholic German Bishops' Conference * (DBK)

"I did not want to wait any longer here and put off the people concerned," Meier is quoted in the message. “It is my concern that we send a clear signal and show responsibility on this topic.” Augsburg is only the second diocese in Germany after the Archdiocese of Freiburg , which now has specific requirements for payments to victims of abuse

Abuse scandal primarily affected male minors

About ten years ago, Klaus Mertes , headmaster of the Berlin Canisius College , started the abuse scandal by writing to former students . An avalanche of further revelations about sexual abuse in church institutions followed. The process of reappraisal continues until today, in 2018 there was a  study of at least 3,677 sexual assaults by at least 1,670 priests and religious from 1946 to 2014  . The victims were predominantly male minors , more than half younger than 14 years.

The now announced Augsburg regulation provides for one-off payments , which - depending on the severity of the case - amount to up to 25,000 euros. A monthly support payment of up to a total of EUR 75,000 is also possible. Funding is expressly not to come from church taxes. According to the information, "only the funds of the Episcopal See are used".

In March, the German bishops adopted new guidelines for payments to victims of sexual abuse at the spring assembly in Mainz. A central, independent body is to determine the amount of payments in the future. The details of the implementation should be fixed by autumn. There was talk of one-time payments up to a maximum of 50,000 euros - in individual cases even more.
