It is one of the construction projects that can be seen from afar in the Franz-Josef-Strauss barracks in Altenstadt that has just started. The listed “castle” gets a new roof. And that is not at a bargain price: the federal government pays a whopping 6.8 million euros for the renovation.

Altenstadt - It is known that more than 42 million euros are to be invested in the infrastructure of the training base in Altenstadt by 2024. Now it is the turn of one of the most striking buildings to be renovated: the staff building on Burglachberg, which houses offices and warehouses and workshops. It is popularly known as the "castle".

According to press officer Tim Reinhold, it is a complete roof renovation. Over the past decades, the existing flat roof was repeatedly sealed with roofing felt made of bitumen membranes as part of the maintenance, explains the first lieutenant. "The countless layers contribute to an increased roof load," says Reinhold. In this respect, a basic renovation is not only necessary for the tightness, but also for the roof load-bearing capacity, which ultimately has to be adapted to new legal requirements.

Preparations have been going on for years

According to the officer, preparations for the project have been going on for several years, and work began in February. The roof renovation will therefore take place in three construction phases. It is the turn of the east wing, which has already been given weather protection. The roof below is now completely removed and replaced.

The entire roof structure is affected

According to the Bundeswehr, this affects not only the roof structure, but the entire roof structure. "The originally installed wooden purlins are not sufficient for the required load capacity," explains the press officer. For reasons of monument protection, they are still preserved. In addition, according to Reinhold, two additional new purlins are installed between all existing old purlins, which then guarantee the desired roof load-bearing capacity. This is followed by sealing with a metal roof. A long-lasting roof covering is said to be achieved with it.

Weather protection roof must go away again in winter

The companies involved want to be finished with the first construction phase (east wing) in October this year. According to the press officer, the provisional weather protection roof must then be removed again since it does not carry any snow loads. The work under the roof of the east wing of the castle should then be completed by January 2021, so that the next phase 2 (south wing) can begin in February 2021.

The entire project will last until autumn / winter 2022

The entire project will be completed with the completion of the third construction phase (west wing) in autumn / winter 2022, Reinhold predicts. He estimates the total cost of roof renovation at 6.8 million euros, which the Federal Agency for Real Estate carries as owner.

A number of construction projects are underway on the Bundeswehr site

In addition to the roof renovation of the "castle", a number of construction projects are also starting on the Bundeswehr site. This summer, the expansion or adaptation of the flight operations areas at the army airfield will begin. The dismantling of the old coal heating system was also reported as a construction project and could start this year.

As reported, the Bundeswehr in Altenstadt no longer uses hard coal to heat the Franz-Josef-Strauß barracks. It now obtains all of its basic energy requirements from the local biogas plant of the company Biogas Kees & Nuscheler. Only in winter do supply peaks occur, which are to be capped by natural gas from Vattenfall.

When the coal heating system is dismantled, the construction site thus freed up is “available for further infrastructure needs,” says the press officer. As reported, this was already in view for the military wind tunnel, in which parachutists can train free fall in the future. The Bundestag has already released the necessary funds of eight million euros for the project, which also includes an umbrella flight simulator.
