The city should give all Weilheim seniors a 20-euro voucher for the restaurants in the district town. That was what AfD City Councilor Rüdiger Imgart had asked for. But the panel was against it.

Weilheim - Every year the city of Weilheim invites its citizens, who are at least 65 years old, to a snack at the folk festival. But this year it was nothing - as is well known, the Weilheimer Volksfest 2020 was canceled due to the corona pandemic. Instead, now city councilor Rüdiger Imgart (AfD) demanded that the city should give all Weilheim seniors a 20-euro voucher this year, which can be redeemed in all restaurants of the district town. With this, the town hall could "send a signal to actively fight the corona consequences", said Imgart in his application: The money saved due to the burst invitation to the festival should "benefit those affected and above all the cafés, restaurants and restaurants in Weilheim" . Because these are particularly affected by the protective measures in connection with Corona.

A funding proposal was missing in the application

In his meeting last Thursday, Weilheim's city council dealt with the proposal - although he should not have put it on the agenda, as Mayor Markus Loth (BfW) emphasized. Because the application contained no funding proposal. However, the rules of procedure of the city council require such if the costs associated with the application are not already budgeted.

And these costs would be considerable, as Stefan Popp from the main office in the town hall calculated. Imgart's proposal would cost the city around 110,000 euros plus shipping, while only 24,000 euros were budgeted for the Volksfest invitation. This sum comes from the experience of previous years. Last year, the city sent food vouchers to 5486 senior citizens from Weilheim (3.50 euros each for a drink and a meal). 3195 of these citizens, or 58 percent, would have redeemed their vouchers. At seven euros per person, this meant costs of around 22,000 euros plus shipping for the city in 2019.

The majority of the city council rejected the AfD representative's application not only because of the significantly higher costs. Brigitte Holeczek (BfW), senior adviser to the panel, argued that the annual Volksfest invitation was primarily a social event, a welcome change for residents, for example. It is more about being together than eating. On the other hand, some seniors could not “just go to restaurants”, Holeczek continues - and she also sees it critically, “when the city is luring risk groups into restaurants during the Corona period”.

"That's the wrong way"

Saika Gebauer-Merx (FDP), city council officer for trade fairs, markets and the Volksfest, emphasized that when inviting to the Volksfest, the landlord always pays "the other half" of the costs. And she referred to a "high effort" that Weilheim's restaurateurs would have with a regulation in the sense of Imgart. "It is certainly true that you have to support the gastronomy in the city", says Gebauer-Merx, "but that is the wrong way." Ullrich Klinkicht ("Weilheim Miteinander"), on the other hand, found the voucher application to be "charming" - "Especially against the background that we increased our attendance fees" (we reported), as he explained: The amount of the voucher should be reduced to ten euros.

However, the vast majority of the city council rejected Imgart's application without further intervention. In addition to the applicant himself, only Klinkicht voted in the end.
