(CNN Spanish) -  In 2003, the sports network ESPN launched into the production of dramatic series. "Playmakers" was the first to portray the life of a fictional football team, "The Cougars," which belonged to a fictional soccer league. Among the topics that were addressed with the various players were homosexuality, drug abuse, gambling in the millions, and domestic violence.

Seventeen years later, the Amazon Prime Video platform debuts "The President", the series based on the most important corruption scandal that the sports world has ever experienced - known as FIFAgate, which took place in 2015 - and that in 8 chapters will show the hearing how contracts of all kinds were developed and the millionaire bribes that were generated.

The series explores the sports scandal through the story of Sergio Jadue, the president of a small Chilean soccer club, who, being an unknown, became a key player when he assumed the ANFP presidency in Chile and worked alongside the FBI in the conspiracy of bribes for $ 150 million dollars at the hands of the president of the Argentine Football Association, Julio Grondona.

How did the idea of doing this series come about? Zona Pop CNN spoke with the Oscar winner for the film "Birdman", Armando Bó, who is the executive producer, director and screenwriter of this story about what led him to produce it: "After having made" Birdman "and the tapes I was involved with, I was looking for something more popular and global, a theme that could reach everyone and the idea came up to do something about FIFAgate, I love Mafia movies and this corruption scandal was very good. It couldn't be just another mafia and when I started investigating I found things that seemed more for a comedy than for a drama like Conmebol had diplomatic immunity like the Vatican or the embassy of some country. Things of total impunity and I decided to take it to parody and satire and laugh a little at this case. ”

The story focuses on two characters, Liza, the FBI investigator who seeks to unmask the members of this mafia and Sergio, the president of a small soccer club in Chile and who, by fate, takes the presidency of the Association Chilean National Professional Soccer (ANFP).

Who Plays Whose Game? Liza's Sergio or Sergio's Liza?

Armando B or
For us it was interesting to put Sergio's character in this great dilemma, to be in the middle of the two women in the story, his wife Nené, who handles and manipulates him to get up and put him in front of another woman who is the character played by Karla, the FBI investigator who at some point protests for being in this investigation. The intention was not to do an FBI series because we weren't going to compete with them. Sergio dances to the rhythm of Liza Harris and the interesting thing about the series is to see how those situations will turn.

Who is who?

  • Karla Souza - Liza Harris (FBI agent)
  • Andrés Parra - Sergio Jaude (President of ANFP)
  • Paulina Gaitán - Nené (Wife of Sergio Jaude)
  • The plot focuses on these three basic characters, who are each of them? Armando Bó responds: “Sergio is an endearing character played by Andrés Parra who gave him a charisma, makes him lovable and I don't know if he is lovable in reality and gives him an antihero share of playing dumb, but being smart. It makes you laugh and excites you. Paulina Gaitán who has a total energy as the leader of this family who, due to her ambition, reaches a complex place, this couple is interesting. Karla's character was very difficult because she had to make this FBI agent original and put an impressive professionalism, she sought to turn him around and managed to laugh at the character that evolves throughout the series.

“El Presidente” is directed by Natalia Beristáin (Luis Miguel: La Serie), Gabriel Díaz (Bala Loca) and Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Armando Bó (Birdman ),  who is also one of the executive producers. The series premieres worldwide on Friday, June 5 exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
