The City University of Hong Kong (hereinafter referred to as CityU) has organized Nepal Volunteer Service Team twice in previous years to lead students into remote mountain areas to help villagers. In January this year, CityU’s Outreach Service Experience Program (SOEP) was funded by the University Education Grant Committee to allow CityU students to expand their horizons by participating in overseas volunteer services in the village of Lamjung in the mountainous region of Nepal In addition to different community services, they recognize the social needs of different countries, experience different lives and reflect on their personal attitudes towards life. After the trip, the students thought the service group was of great significance. What is so special about the CityU Nepal Volunteer Service Group?

Learn from each other and grow together

Participants accumulated teaching experience in the process of free teaching and found enthusiasm for teaching.

The CityU Nepal Volunteer Service Group led its members into mountain schools to serve as volunteer teachers, bringing different learning experiences and inspiration to the hard-working students in resource-poor classrooms. In the process of conducting free teaching, the members immediately felt the strong contrast between the mountainous area with limited resources and the affluent Hong Kong when they stepped into the under-equipped classrooms. The members of the service group need to formulate suitable and interesting classroom content, and use natural lighting, blackboards in the classroom, several pieces of chalk and simple self-made teaching materials to impart their knowledge to local students. In order to ensure a smooth teaching process, members need to make sufficient preparations beforehand, and master the skills to control classroom order and guide students to participate in the classroom. Seeing that the local schoolchildren still persist in learning and enjoy the time of the class despite the difficulties, let members reflect on the rich learning opportunities and resources they have.

Zhou Jian, who is in the fourth grade of Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) at CityU, bluntly said that the biggest thing he got from this journey was the accumulation of teaching experience and enthusiasm for teaching in the process of free teaching, determined to become a chemistry teacher after graduation. In free teaching, he tried his best to overcome the language barrier between the two sides, and the active participation of local students made him deeply feel the responsibility and glory as a teacher, and affirm his future career path.

Experience the hard life in mountainous areas and reflect on your attitude towards life

Participants and team members participate in shadow work together and experience the work of local women delivering firewood on weekdays.

Hong Kong has convenient transportation. It is hard to imagine ordinary Hong Kong people spending five to six hours walking to and from school every day. The school specially arranged a one-day mountain walking experience to let participants feel the hardship of mountain school children going back and forth to school every day. The members were arranged to follow the pace of the local schoolchildren and travel across the mountains to the villages in the "nearby" teaching. The mountain roads along the way were rugged. The large and small stones and the bumpy muddy road made the students feel very difficult. But when the members saw the local schoolchildren putting on slippers and carrying heavy schoolbags, they still smiled and jumped to school with books in hand, letting all the students feel their pursuit and desire for education.

Through this service group, the students also became the "Shadows" of local women. They followed the mothers of their host families to do household chores, including farming, cooking, chopping wood, etc., to observe and experience the livelihood of rural life up close. Through several farming experiences, members first tasted the agricultural work of removing weeds, sowing seeds, harvesting crops, and sifting rice husks with the original method, and experienced the hard work of farmers bending over for a long time. Students on the farmland also caused a lot of jokes due to language barriers. After that, the members have to assist the villagers to chop wood for a fire, use simple tools to chop the wood and carry about 20 kilograms of firewood home. After the experience, the members all admired the hard work and effort of the local women for the family. After a round of hard work, seeing the food in front of me and the tea made from the firewood made the students realize that this is the hard work of everyone and the hard-won results. I am grateful for the resources I have in city life.
