Berlin (dpa) - The number of corona patients in intensive care treatment has declined significantly in Germany over the past few weeks.

According to the DIVI intensive care register, as of Tuesday 689 people with Covid-19 suffered from intensive care units, about half of whom were ventilated. In mid-April there were at times more than 2900 patients. Although the clinics have to report the occupancy of their intensive care beds to the register, the daily number of reporting clinic locations fluctuates.

The estimated number of registered and still active corona cases in Germany is currently around 7100. This comes from figures from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The number of new infections remains at a comparatively low level. The health authorities in Germany reported 213 corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day (as of 2.6. 0:00). Brandenburg, Saxony, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and Hamburg did not report a single new infection after the Pentecost weekend on Tuesday, Rhineland-Palatinate one.

According to the latest RKI information, the number of reproductions, or R-value for short, has dropped below the critical mark of 1.0 again, namely to 0.89 (data status 2.6. 0 o'clock). This means that an infected person infects less than another person on average. The R value shows the infection process approximately one and a half weeks beforehand. The previous day it was at 1.20 (data status 1.6. 0 o'clock).

The RKI had already declared at the weekend that the R-value was sensitive to short-term changes in the number of cases, such as those caused by individual outbreaks. This could lead to relatively large fluctuations, especially in the case of a smaller number of new cases.

Since mid-May, the RKI has also given a so-called 7-day R. It refers to a longer period and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value (data status 2.6. 0 o'clock) was 0.87 (previous day: 0.95). It shows the infection process 8 to 16 days ago.

With a few exceptions, according to the RKI, all counties in Germany reported fewer than 25 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days. However, the RKI points out that its numbers may differ from the more current local information. Around 100 out of around 400 counties were therefore not aware of any newly infected people during this period.

A corona outbreak in Göttingen has had far-reaching consequences for several hundred students. As a result of private celebrations for the Muslim Sugar Festival, 80 people have now been shown to be infected with the corona virus in Göttingen. According to the city, there are currently 230 people in the city and district of Göttingen and 140 in the rest of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia in quarantine.

With the Sugar Festival, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan. Because 24 children are among the infected, the city wants to close all schools in Göttingen and some in the district this week.
