Mumbai (dpa) - Hundreds of thousands of people have been brought to emergency shelters in India because of a tropical cyclone.

Storm "Nisarga" should hit land on Wednesday afternoon (local time) around 100 kilometers south of the metropolis Mumbai on the west coast, as the Indian meteorological service announced. The storm is said to bring a lot of rain and wind speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

Mumbai is already suffering badly from Corona. The richest city in India is the epicenter of the virus with a quarter of the cases. Hospital beds and ventilators are scarce, according to local health authorities.

Such a storm has not happened in the region for a long time, according to the meteorologists. The storm is said to be weaker than another cyclone that raged in India's northeast and Bangladesh almost two weeks ago, killing more than 100 people and temporarily leaving millions without electricity.
