  • The Messe München brings in an average year 3.3 billion euros into the German economy.
  • This emerges from a new study.
  • This year, up to € 2.3 billion could be missing due to the corona pandemic .

Munich - It's a simple formula: For every euro that goes to Messe München , the federal government gets ten - that's how fair boss Klaus Dittrich explains the leverage effect of the events in Riem. Because visitors not only pay for admission, but also travel, hotel accommodation, restaurant visits and shopping. According to a new study, an average year brings together 3.3 billion euros for the federal government, 1.8 billion of which will go to the Munich economy. That is 25 percent more than in the last survey in 2013.

Munich: Fair summer is canceled due to Corona - losses in the billions

This value, i.e. the additional income from the events, is called the detour return - and the Ifo Institute calculates this every six years for Messe München . From 2001 to 2019 the total increased continuously. The Corona crisis should, however, tear a hole in the statistics. Trade fairs may again take place in Bavaria from September 1, but Dittrich fears: "We are currently anticipating sales losses of up to 230 million euros this year." And the 1:10 formula also applies the other way round. Means: That would cost the federal government around 2.3 billion euros.

The ExpoReal should kick off: From October 5th to 7th, the real estate fair is to take place on 70,000 square meters. "The fact that we have now been given the green light for this is an important signal," says Dittrich. The record year 2019 shows the importance of trade fairs for the entire economy: the events even triggered sales of EUR 4.31 billion . "The bauma, the world's largest trade fair, alone generated sales of EUR 1.55 billion," says Dittrich. In addition, the events in Riem in 2019 would have created over 35,000 jobs.

Trade fair in Munich: 27,000 jobs created on average

The fair creates 27,000 jobs in an average year. And the federal government in particular benefits from this: it collects around 400 million euros in value added tax and wage taxes. The Free State will get 217 million, the Munich City Treasurer 33 million.

According to the Ifo study, personnel costs account for around 18 percent of the exhibitor's expenses. 20 percent go to stand construction, 18 percent to stand rental. In total, exhibitors would pay an average of 1.5 billion euros per year for their exhibition stand.

"The event is worth almost a billion euros to visitors," says ifo economist Horst Penzkofer. Over 96 percent of overnight stays, travel expenses and gastronomy accounted for 963 million euros. Specifically: 36 percent of the expenditure went to long-distance transport, 20 percent to overnight stays, 15 percent to gastronomy.

Munich: In comparison - Wiesn manages a third in two weeks

For comparison: The economic value of the Oktoberfest in 2018 was 1.23 billion euros - within two weeks, the Oktoberfest accounts for more than a third of Messe München's annual turnover. According to the Department for Labor and Business, the festival guests spent almost half of the expenditure (505 million euros) on overnight stays and gastronomy, more than directly at the Oktoberfest - the value was only 442 million euros.
