Meghan Markle: "George Floyd's life mattered"

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, spoke publicly for the first time about George Floyd's death, calling it "absolutely devastating."
She was speaking to the Immaculate Heart High School graduating class in Los Angeles, in a video message Wednesday night.
In a heartfelt speech, he said that he had hesitated to talk about the ongoing protests because he did not want his words to be taken apart, but ultimately decided to do so after remembering a former teacher who used to say, "He always remembers putting others' needs for on top of your own fears. "
"Those words have stayed with me all my life and I've thought about it more in the last week than ever," said the duchess.
"George Floyd's life mattered and Breonna Taylor's life mattered and Philando Castile's life mattered and Tamir Rice's life mattered, and so did many other names of people we know and names we don't know," he said.
She recalled the Los Angeles riots in 1992, which occurred when she was 11 or 12 years old and lived in the city, and said those riots "were also triggered by an act of senseless racism."
"I know you know that black lives matter, so I am already excited about what they are going to do in the world," she told the new graduates.
“You are going to use your voice more strongly than you have been able to before because most of you are 18 years old, or are turning 18 years old, so you are going to vote. You will have empathy for those who do not see the world through the same lens that you do. "

The latest from the protests in Washington and New York

In Washington, after 2 am, long after the 11 pm curfew, protesters were still on the streets.
They are gathered near Lafayette Square, which is a few blocks from the White House, but protesters have been pushed further back today, and some areas were blocked.
Saint John's Church, where President Donald Trump had his picture taken with a bible earlier this week, was closed to worshipers today for the first time since the September 11 attack, CNN correspondent Alex Marquadt said in the scene.
"Still, (people are) protesting peacefully and the mayor of Washington said the curfew would not, in essence, apply as long as protesters remain peaceful," Marquadt said.
In New York, there are still crowds of people outside, in violation of the 8 pm curfew across the city. Law enforcement officers are also on the scene, but things remain quiet for now, with protesters mostly kneeling and sitting on the ground with their hands up and holding protest signs.
There were no reported cases of looting tonight, police told CNN earlier.
