"With an outstanding spirit of personal sacrifice in favor of public health and the well-being of society as a whole, they have already become a symbol of the fight against the greatest global pandemic that has plagued humanity in the last century", highlighted a statement from the foundation.

This is the first time that the jury in charge of awarding the award meets virtually, via videoconference.

The Princess of Asturias Awards are intended, according to its regulations, to award “the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out by people, institutions, groups of people or institutions in the international arena”.

According to the foundation's website, "each of the Princess of Asturias Awards is endowed with a sculpture by Joan Miró - a representative symbol of the award - a diploma, a badge and a cash amount of 50,000 euros."

Almost 240,000 cases of coronavirus have been registered in Spain, of which around 51,000 correspond to health workers. At least 27 thousand people have died from the virus and, although the Spanish authorities have not offered an official number of deceased doctors and nurses, the General Council of Official Medical Associations of Spain estimates that some 48 health workers have died as a result from covid-19.
