  • The McDonald’s branch on Wasserburger Landstrasse in Trudering was the scene of a terrible plane crash 32 years ago .
  • The accident started the discussion about relocating Munich Airport to Erdinger Moos.
  • Now several residential and commercial buildings are to be built on the property according to the plans of a Grünwald investor.

Munich - The plane crash of August 11, 1987 in Trudering is one of the most terrible accidents in Munich's history. To extend his ticket for the Piper PA-31T, a professional pilot is traveling with the examiner and a secretary from the Southern Bavarian Air Office. During the landing approach to the former Riem airport, the inspector surprisingly switched off the engine.

The task: to land safely anyway. But the plane spins down, the pilot can only intercept it too late. The machine slides over the crossroads and rams a bus that races into the McDonald's branch on Wasserburger Landstrasse. The plane also bangs against the building. A wing breaks, the kerosene ignites and sets fire to the building, plane and parts of the bus.

Terrible scenes are happening. A cyclist beheaded the wing, bus passengers run around like living torches. In the end, nine people died as a result of the crash. Of the 30 injured, some are drawn for the rest of their lives. The accident site looks like a bomb attack. The terrible misfortune starts the discussion about relocating Munich Airport to Erdinger Moos.

Trudering: Disaster leads to many changes in Bavarian airspace

Since the accident, the tests in Bavaria have no longer been carried out by civil servants, but by flight experts. A memorial stone for the victims of the plane crash stands on Truderinger Strasse opposite the fast food restaurant . The fast food restaurant, which was rebuilt in the same place, is now to be demolished.

The city has two applications from a Grünwald investor. It is planned to build a total of ten residential and commercial buildings on Wasserburger Landstrasse 52 to 60. These are the McDonald's area plus the adjoining properties on which there are currently several car dealerships. Three blocks are to be built here, each around 50 meters long and almost ten meters high, as a block perimeter development. Behind it, seven more residential buildings are to be built, which rise about nine meters high.

Munich: Reconstruction of the site of the disaster: Trudering district committee rejects applications

The applications can actually be approved, but the Trudering district committee has rejected them. Because the city council has just decided on a framework plan for Wasserburger Landstrasse. This also defines the “Truderinger Linse” section, to which the two properties belong. At the intersection in front of today's McDonald's, the city planners imagine a striking high-rise building with seven to nine floors.

In addition, along the Wasserburger Landstrasse, a peripheral development with at least five floors, i.e. a good 19 meters high, as well as small neighborhood squares and in the second row significantly lower buildings as a transition to the adjacent garden city areas. The city council explicitly calls for development plans for the redensification and "proof of the necessary social infrastructure in the ground floor zones". Georg Kronawitter (CSU) warns that this would clearly undermine the construction plans submitted. The BA therefore adheres to the framework planning requirements.
