Coronavirus in Germany: Focus on the Robert Koch Institute

Update from June 3, 7:03 p.m .: The Robert Koch Institute has gained popularity in times of the coronavirus pandemic . New infection numbers and parameters are presented every day. However, the communication behavior of the RKI has changed drastically in the recent past .

At least this is the opinion of Olaf Gersemann, head of the business and finance department at “Welt”. The 51-year-old journalist criticized on Twitter: "The federal agency RKI has almost cut off communication with the public about the Corona crisis."

Where's Behle, uh wieler? 1/7

The federal authority RKI has almost completely cut off communication with the public about the #Corona crisis.

In fact, the last press release is dated early April. In the recent past, the RKI around Chef Lothar Wieler has also not appeared at press conferences.

The fact that the RKI's technical assessments are currently missing and instead only the daily updated figures are given is “not very helpful for evaluating current events.”

"The communication behavior of the Robert Koch Institute is therefore all in all" disturbing. "

Where's Behle, uh wieler? 5/7

The communication behavior of the federal authority is also disturbing because representatives like President Lothar Wieler repeatedly emphasized in March and April that we were only "at the beginning" of the epidemic.

A person who happened to witness the hustle and bustle on the Landwehr Canal described the situation opposite the picture as follows: "In the afternoon, a handful of larger ships and rafts as well as a total of well over a hundred inflatable boats, folding boats and kayaks on the Landwehr Canal headed towards the urban port." The water protection police were therefore on site, and in the late afternoon the organizers then informed that the demonstration had to be stopped because the situation on the shore was getting out of control from a police perspective . At this point, however, the end of the demo was already near. "The mood was peaceful and partying, the corona distances were of course rarely observed," it said.

Since this weekend there have been no more limited participants in demonstrations in Berlin . The red-red-green senate had decided to relax on Thursday (May 28).

Corona outbreak in Göttingen: State government sticks to easing

Update from 12.13 p.m .: After the Corona outbreak in Göttingen , the Lower Saxony state government sees no need to move away from the easing course . "What is happening is currently not changing our phased plan," said Deputy Government Spokeswoman Kathrin Riggert on Whit Monday.

The city of Göttingen is now investigating indications that the illegal opening of a shisha bar could have contributed to the spread of the virus. All six shisha bars in Göttingen were checked on Sunday, one was open contrary to the regulations of the country. After several private celebrations, 36 people had initially tested positive for Sars-CoV-2 in Göttingen . Then 310 contact persons were identified by Sunday evening.

As the Göttingen Tagbeblatt reports, many people who got infected lived in a high-rise complex in the university town, the Iduna Center. The head of the Göttingen crisis team, Petra Broistedt, told the newspaper that it was an exaggeration to quarantine all 700 people in the building. Around 60 contact persons lived in the complex. "It would be inappropriate to isolate the entire house because of this," she told the newspaper.

Corona outbreak at German police instructors in Afghanistan - police officers flown to Germany

Update from 11.07 a.m .: In Afghanistan there was a corona outbreak among German police instructors . The Federal Ministry of the Interior has now brought the nine police officers back to Germany. On Sunday (May 31), the Air Force flew three sick instructors home with a specially equipped Airbus A400 MedEvac . Also on board was an infected Bundeswehr soldier who was stationed at Camp Marmal in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.

The Airbus landed in Cologne late Sunday evening. At the same time, six other police officers were brought back to Germany with a chartered plane. They had worked with the infected colleagues on the training mission and were therefore considered to be first contacts, a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior said in the evening. Since there were no suitable civil flights due to the Corona crisis , they were flown out by a private provider of medical flights.

Because of Corona cases: German forces brought back from Afghanistan

The nine officers are part of the unit that trains local police officers in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif. This is done as part of the  "German Police Project Team" . Three of them reported symptoms such as mild fever, nausea, and vomiting on May 26 . The Corona test was positive for two of them , said the spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Since the third also shows symptoms, an infection should also be assumed for him.

The men were accompanied on the return flight for safety by a doctor and an emergency medic, as a spokesman for the medical service of the Bundeswehr said. Due to the Corona cases, the training mission in Afghanistan is now stalling. Because nine police officers are now missing, the secured accommodation of the team cannot be used temporarily. That explained a Ministry spokesman. A minimum number of German emergency personnel is required for operation.

In addition to two police officers permanently stationed at the military part of Kabul Airport in the NATO camp, the head of the project and three other forces would now be accommodated at the German embassy in Kabul . They would have had no contact with the sick. A presence on site is thus still ensured, but the performance of the tasks is further restricted.

Corona virus in Germany - survey shows: one in two would be vaccinated

Update of 9:49: Every second German would be against the coronavirus get vaccinated if there was a vaccine. This was the result of a representative survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency (dpa). One in four would do it, one in five of the 2056 respondents refused a vaccination. According to the online survey, men would be more likely to be vaccinated than women.

No vaccine against the coronavirus is currently available. According to most experts, the first approved vaccines should not be ready for mass use until next year at the earliest. Large clinical trials could, however, involve vaccinations of certain population groups beforehand. However, it is also possible that it will take years before a vaccine is available that offers good protection.

Germans are divided on the question of mandatory vaccination against the corona virus: While 44 percent of those questioned advocated it, 40 percent opposed it. The German government had repeatedly emphasized that it would not make future corona vaccination compulsory.

Did scientists make an important observation in the fight against the corona virus? This makes it possible to predict whether a disease will be mild or severe.

However, the RKI points out that due to quality checks, the daily updated data can still change. In addition, the number of new cases could also contain errors for technical reasons.

According to RKI information , up to now 8511 people in Germany have been proven to be infected with the corona virus. This increased the number of reported deaths by 11 within 24 hours. According to the latest information from the RKI, the number of reproductions , or R-value for short, was 1.04 at Saturday (as of May 31 at midnight). On Sunday it was 1.04 (previous day: 1.03). This means that an infected person infects about another person on average. The R value shows the infection process approximately one and a half weeks beforehand.

The R-value had already exceeded the limit of 1 for the first time in two weeks on Saturday . The SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach was alarmed on Twitter :

It actually looks as if the R-value is slowly increasing. Too many think that spook is over. Unfortunately, there can be no question of that. The mood is better than the situation. MPs are now “in charge” and should be more cautious instead of the easing competition https://t.co/BmH2rQkiwP

- Karl Lauterbach (@Karl_Lauterbach) May 30, 2020

The RKI also said that it was sensitive to short-term changes in the number of cases, such as those caused by individual outbreaks (see, for example, in Göttngen, update from 3:22 p.m.) . "This can lead to relatively large fluctuations, especially when there are fewer new cases overall."

Because of recklessness: Big corona outbreak in Göttingen - death statistics in April alarming

That is eight percent more than the average of the four previous years. The last time there were more than 80,000 deaths in April more than 40 years ago was in 1977. Regionally, this development is largely shaped by three federal states *: Bavaria *, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia . With 2,719 deaths, the Free State had 18 percent more than the average of the previous four years. Also in Baden-Württemberg there was an increase of 16 percent with 1958 cases. In North Rhine-Westphalia it was around five percent more with 1254 cases.

A connection with the coronavirus is obvious for the Federal Statistical Office: "These findings on so-called over-mortality correspond to the absolute numbers with the data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths , which are reported to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI)", writes the Federal Statistical Office, but clarifies: "But this does not mean that all additional cases in the death statistics have died of COVID-19. Decreases or increases in other causes of death can also have an effect on the total number of deaths. The flu wave, as a possible influencing factor, has been over this year since mid-March. Flu waves usually affect mortality until mid-April. ”
