During the suspension of the epidemic, many primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong arranged online teaching to allow students to learn knowledge. In addition to teaching basic subject knowledge online, Catholic Territory Island School also arranged a special program-"HomeLab Scientist", which allows students to sit at home and connect the knowledge and life experience to increase the interest of learning.

Little scientist turns home into a laboratory

During the suspension, in order to enable students to diversify their studies, the chairman of the school’s General Studies Department led a group of teachers to discuss and prepare some experiments related to anti-epidemic. Through experiments, explain the scientific principles in it, let students understand the phenomena in daily life, and stimulate students' interest in learning and thinking. The experimental materials in "HomeLab Scientists" are easy to prepare, and students can be transformed into little scientists at home, turning their homes into laboratories and exerting the spirit of scientific inquiry.

Surgical mask test-understand the importance of wearing

New coronaviruses are rampant, and masks have become our necessities, but the quality of the masks sold in the market varies. Therefore, the teachers prepared a simple surgical mask test to introduce the structure of the mask to the students and explain the principle of the mask blocking the virus through the waterproof layer of the test mask. Students can test their own hands to deepen their understanding of masks and understand the importance of using masks correctly.

Handwashing experiment with liquid soap-hands covered with bacteria

In addition to wearing masks, frequent hand washing is also an indispensable part of the fight against epidemics. So, the teachers prepared experiments related to washing hands with liquid soap. Through testing, let students understand the reason and importance of washing hands with liquid soap. During the live broadcast, the students responded enthusiastically. The teacher interacted with the students while doing the experiment, asking questions in real time, allowing the students to think about the principles behind the experiment. The teacher used vanilla to simulate bacteria. When the students saw that the hand with liquid soap was put into the water, the vanilla in the water immediately scattered, and they all screamed, "Wow!"

Conducting a controlled experiment, students can observe the difference between washing hands with and without liquid soap, and understand that using liquid soap to wash hands correctly can effectively clean bacteria and viruses. "HomeLab Scientist" enables students to fight the epidemic while exerting a realistic scientific spirit and cultivate their curiosity about things.

Inquiry into parent-child science

In response to the enthusiastic response of the students, the teachers also produced a series of parent-child science exploration videos under the name of "HomeLab Scientist", including the explanation of the "visual persistence" effect of science in "cage birds"; "Dance" explains the principle of sound vibration, etc. Students and parents need to use the concept of "fair test" and cooperate with the attitude of "bold assumptions and careful verification" to complete the task, so that they understand the importance of innovative thinking and scientific verification. By watching teaching videos with parents and children, learning scientific principles, making small hand-made works, and promoting parent-child relationships, students and parents can escape from the "electronic forest" and bury their heads in their own hand-made works.

Schools promote STEM education and pay attention to creative thinking

The Catholic Territory School of Catholic Islands has been committed to promoting school-wide STEM education since 2015. Take the common sense as the main axis, cooperate with mathematics and computer science and other subjects to jointly promote STEM education, arrange scientific inquiry and special study for students, and use the knowledge and skills of different subjects to solve problems. This year, the school also arranged fifth grade students to participate in the DreamStarter dream starter program, allowing teachers and students to "dream" together. In addition, the school also actively arranges students to participate in off-campus STEM activities, allowing students to broaden their horizons and enhance self-confidence. Students are expected to enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills through interdisciplinary "brainstorming and do-it-yourself" to meet the new challenges of the 21st century.
