Everything would have to go "perfectly" to get a coronavirus vaccine in January, experts say.

By Shelby Lin Erdman

(Credit: MLADEN ANTONOV / AFP via Getty Images)

Infectious disease experts from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center noted that the chances of developing a successful covid-19 vaccine by January are an extremely ambitious challenge , but possible.

"Everything will have to be incredibly perfect if that is to happen," said Dr. Larry Corey, a leading expert in virology, immunology and vaccine development, and a member of the Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Division at the Fred Hutch Center. "Obviously, the first ready-to-use vaccine, which is this RNA vaccine, either from Pfizer or Moderna, will have to work terribly well to get a response in January."

"The greater or better the efficacy, the shorter the time it takes to demonstrate that a vaccine actually has an effect as the number of cases that occurs is much less in the vaccine group than in the placebo group. So could this happen in January? Yes, it could potentially happen in January, ”added Corey.

Vaccine trials are already underway and Corey said they will require the cooperation and collaboration of the pharmaceutical industry, academia, research centers, the biotechnology industry and the NIH.

The only thing that matters in the end is the vaccine data, said Dr. John Mascola, director of the Vaccine Research Center at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who was also part of the forum.

"All of the vaccine scientists in the world, political scientists in the world can make predictions or be encouraged by the data, but the only data that matters in the end is if we do a placebo-controlled study and we can confidently say that the vaccine works, it reduces the risk of someone contracting severe covid-19, "insisted Mascola.

WHO will continue its hydroxychloroquine study "for now", following UK decision to end its study

By Jacqueline Howard

(Credit: GEORGE FREY / AFP via Getty Images)

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced this Friday that its studies on hydroxychloroquine will continue "for now", despite the fact that researchers from the United Kingdom previously reported that they will end their own trials on this drug, as they concluded that " there is no evidence of their benefit. "

“They are two different trials, with their own protocols, their own supervisory committees. And therefore we will continue for now and our committee will consider the data as it becomes available. ”

The announcement came after WHO confirmed that it had received a notice from the organizers of the so-called Recovery Trial, a large UK trial investigating possible coronavirus treatments, about the decision to end the part devoted to investigating hydroxychloroquine in the study.

“They informed us about the preliminary results, with which they went to the press. We look forward to seeing the final analysis of the data and the publication that will come out of it, and certainly our committee will consider these results as we go forward, ”said Soumya Swaminathan, WHO chief scientist.

Last week, the WHO temporarily suspended hydroxychloroquine research in its Solidarity Trial, due to concerns about the drug's safety and to review its own data. Then on Wednesday, following that procedure, the organization announced that it decided to resume the study of hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for covid-19.

"Since Solidarity and Recovery are two of the largest trials, and they also have very, very similar study designs, we've been in touch," added Swaminathan.

New York reports lowest number of coronavirus-related deaths in weeks, says Cuomo

By Adrienne Vogt

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in New York on June 4 was 42, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo, the lowest number since the pandemic began.

Just eight weeks ago, daily deaths were 800 in the state, he said.

The state is also at its lowest hospitalization rate to date, the governor added.

Cuomo praised the people of the state for quickly changing their behavior to combat the pandemic.

“We know that we can change, and we know that we can change dramatically. People are focused, we have a plan, and that's when social reform happens, ”he said.

The coronavirus pandemic "will go down in history as one of the great moments of transformation in society," he added.

UK ends hydroxychloroquine study because "no evidence of benefit," researchers say

By Jacqueline Howard

Researchers in the United Kingdom have abruptly halted another trial against covid-19 involving hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug.

The Recovery Trial, a large UK trial investigating possible coronavirus treatments, has stopped including hydroxychloroquine in its study because "there is no evidence of its benefit," the researchers announced Friday. Other branches of the trial will continue, enrolling more than 11,000 patients from 175 hospitals across the country.

"We reviewed the data and concluded that there is no evidence of a beneficial effect of hydroxychloroquine in hospitalized patients with covid and we decided to discontinue enrolling patients in that arm of the hydroxychloroquine study, with immediate effect, and that has been processed this morning, ”Martin Landray, the study's deputy chief investigator and professor at Oxford University, said during a press conference on Friday.

As part of the trial, 1,542 covid patients were randomly selected to receive hydroxychloroquine as treatment compared to 3,132 patients who received standard standard care.

About the study: The data showed that after approximately 28 days, 25.7% of patients who received hydroxychloroquine had died compared to 23.5% of patients who received only usual care.

"That is not statistically significant, but as you can see from the numbers, that result shows that there really is no evidence of a benefit," said Landray.

"I think we can say that these data convincingly rule out any significant mortality benefits," said Landray. "Our conclusion is that this treatment does not reduce the risk of dying from covid among hospital patients. That clearly has significant importance in the way that patients are treated not only in the UK, but worldwide. ”

Some Background: Last week, the World Health Organization temporarily halted this branch of the hydroxychloroquine study from its Solidarity Trial due to concerns about the safety of the drug and to review its own data. Then on Wednesday, after that review, the WHO announced that it decided to resume the study with hydroxychloroquine as a possible treatment for covid-19 in the trial.

Peter Horby, chief investigator of the recovery trial and professor at the University of Oxford, said on Friday that he and his colleagues have reported to WHO the data found in their trial and the decision to end this branch of the study.

"We have been on the phone this morning with the World Health Organization," Horby said during the conference on Friday. "They will convene their committee to reconsider their decision based on today's events."

WHO changes guidelines on face masks and urges governments to encourage its use

The World Health Organization (WHO) is now asking countries to encourage the general public to wear cloth masks in areas where there is still an intense spread of the new coronavirus. He also encouraged all health workers and caregivers to wear face masks during their shifts.

"The WHO advises governments to encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission and physical distance is difficult, such as on public transport, in stores or in other confined or crowded environments," said the director general of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a press conference in Geneva this Friday.

This is what the new WHO recommendations say:

"In areas with community transmission, we advise that people 60 years of age or older, or those with underlying conditions, wear medical masks in situations where physical distancing is not possible," said Tedros.

"In areas with widespread transmission, the WHO recommends medical masks for all people working in clinical areas of a health facility, not just for workers treating patients with covid-19," added the WHO director-general.

The WHO recommends that where there is widespread transmission, a limited capacity to contain covid-19 outbreaks and the physical distance of at least one meter cannot be achieved, then governments should encourage their public to wear a cloth mask, Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical leader for the response to coronavirus and head of the emerging diseases and zoonoses unit, told CNN.

What should the masks recommended by the WHO be like?

The new guidelines recommend that these fabric masks, which may be homemade, have at least three layers: an inner layer of an absorbent material such as cotton; an intermediate layer that acts as a filter or barrier, such as polypropylene of non-woven material; and an outer layer of a non-absorbent material, such as polyester or polyester blend.

Van Kerkhove also said that materials that may be silk, elastic or porous should be avoided.

Remember: These updated recommendations announced on June 5, 2020 are a change from what the WHO previously advised on masks, when recommending not to wear them if you were not ill or if you were not caring for someone who was ill, in an effort to maintain masks available for healthcare workers.

Tedros added that the new guideline was updated based on the evolution of the evidence.

US authorities fear protests will bring new covid-19 outbreaks
