Thousands of people attend the Black Lives Matter rally in London

By CNN's Nic Robertson, Mick Krever, and Nada Bashir

Thousands of peaceful protesters gathered in London's Parliament Square on Saturday as part of a Black Lives Matter rally in solidarity with protests in the United States.

The protest, which has so far been shown to be completely peaceful, was organized after the riots in the United States over the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis.

Today, protesters from the UK rallied to sing Floyd's name and "black lives matter". In a moment, they all knelt in unison.

"I feel like what happened in the US it was just a spark, which lit everywhere ... I think George Floyd's death lit her all over the world and it's incredible, "a protester told CNN on Saturday.

“It is a global problem, no matter where it is. It is a problem everywhere, we all need to get up, "added another protester.

Coronavirus concerns: The meeting has generated significant participation, despite the government urging citizens not to demonstrate for fear that the protest could lead to further spread of the coronavirus.

"I fully understand people's desire to express their point of view and have that right to protest, but the fact is that we are in a health pandemic across the UK," the UK Home Secretary said on Saturday, Priti Patel, during an interview with Sky News. "I would say to those who want to protest, please don't do it," she added.

While little social detachment has been observed at the rally, people have been seen handing out masks and gloves for free to protect protesters from the spread of the virus.

According to the UK Metropolitan Police, the roads to Parliament Square have been closed "to protect both protesters and vehicles" entering the area. While there is a significant police presence, officers do not wear protective riot gear.
