A new US study suggests that infection with other coronaviruses could also cause immunity to Sars-CoV-2. That would have far-reaching consequences for Germany too.

  • A herd immunity of the population could end the Corona crisis * . For this, 70 percent of the population would have to be immune.
  • According to a new study, however , the immunity rate in Germany could be much higher than previously thought.
  • Here you will find the basic facts about the corona virus and the corona news from Germany. You can also find the current number of cases in Germany as a map. The following recommendations for Corona protective measures * are currently available.

Munich - Relaxation in the corona crisis can only occur if the development of a vaccine * has succeeded or about 70 percent of the population has been infected with the novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 . This is the scientific consensus on the corona pandemic. But with regard to the second point - the so-called herd immunity *  - a new assessment could now arise, which could shorten the duration of the corona crisis considerably.

Coronavirus: US study with new findings - people after harmless flu immune to Sars-Cov-2?

A US laboratory study published in the journal Cell shows that an infection with Sars-CoV-2 may not be necessary to develop immunity . Infection with other coronaviruses that are similar to Sars-CoV-2 could also be sufficient to develop immune cells, which then provide immunity. Such corona viruses have been in circulation for years and do not necessarily trigger serious illnesses such as Covid-19 , but often only harmless colds.

If these tests prove to be true, this could mean that the number of people with immunity * in Germany is significantly higher than previously thought. "If the immune response is also confirmed in epidemiological studies, a 20 to 30 percent infection could be sufficient to interrupt the exponential spread," says virologist Prof. Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg Picture.

Coronavirus: immunity rate higher than expected? A look at Sweden could bring clarity

In this case, a look at Sweden is also very interesting. Due to the Swedish strategy in the Corona crisis , 20 percent of the population there is probably already immune to Sars CoV-2 infection . If the theory of the study is confirmed, the situation in Sweden's infection numbers should relax in the coming weeks.

Schmidt-Chanasit also warns of caution. The infection with a similar coronavirus could lead 19 Covid-even more severe courses of. "There are diseases in which the immune response to a related pathogen is enhanced by the immune cells," says the virologist * . The assumptions must now be confirmed in further studies in order to be able to make a clear statement about immunity to Sars-CoV-2.
