Brazil: Bolsonaro, captain without compass at the heart of the storm

Fourteen months after coming to power, the Brazilian president is weakened by his refusal to take seriously an illness that has killed more than 36,000 people in his country.

As of Wednesday, February 26, Jair Bolsonaro's calendar page is blank. He ends a short vacation in a military fort in a seaside resort in the Southeast. Like every year, he fled Carnival, celebrated in joy throughout Brazil but which he hates. And yet, the president does not know it yet but this day changed the course of his mandate. On February 26, the first case of Covid-19 in Brazil was officially diagnosed in Sao Paulo, on a 61-year-old man returning from Italy. This anonymous patient will recover. On the other hand, the populist president is unlikely to emerge unscathed from the most serious health, economic and social crisis in the recent history of the largest country in Latin America.
