Researchers from Germany and Norway have examined blood groups for the likelihood of severe Covid-19 disease. There were big differences.

  • In the corona crisis * , some people become seriously ill, while others do not notice the infection at all.
  • Researchers have now examined the role of the blood group in the course of violent illnesses.
  • The result indicates large differences in the different blood types .
  • Here you will find the basic facts about the corona virus * and the corona news from Germany. You can also find the current number of cases in Germany as a map. The following recommendations for corona protective measures * are currently available.

Munich - It is one of the mysteries of the new corona virus: Why does some infection end fatally despite medical help, while other sufferers do not even reveal symptoms *? This completely different form of the disease Covid-19 also leaves completely open how many people were really infected and then developed immunity to Sars-CoV-2. It is possibly the eternal question about the size of the undisclosed figure . This pandemic is characterized by many uncertainties.

This also applies to the question about risk patients * . Who is particularly at risk? The older   and the weak - that was an early conviction. And especially people with previous illnesses . Men * overall more than women. At times, it was also suspected that smokers were more likely to be hit by severe courses than people who could not gain so much from the glow stick.

Corona study: Covid-19 patients from Italy and Spain divided by blood group

But in the latter case, the following now applies: A lot of smoke for nothing. For this, experts have achieved initial success in researching the role of the blood group in the corona pandemic . For this purpose, scientists from Germany and Norway examined 1,610 patients whose course of the disease was particularly severe and who even needed an oxygen supply. The subjects came from seven particularly hard-hit regions in Italy and Spain, such as Milan, Monza, Madrid, San Sebastian and Barcelona.

Blood samples from 2205 healthy people were also obtained from there in order to compare them with those of the former corona sufferers. The researchers concluded that people with blood group A appeared to be at significantly higher risk of developing a severe disease than the other blood types. The least risk therefore appears to be for people with blood group 0 .

Corona study: Most likely course of disease in blood group A

The former group appears to be twice as likely to be dependent on oxygen administration or a ventilator for a Covid 19 disease as the null blood group. The other, but not so common blood types AB and B are in between.

Chinese scientists had already come to a similar conclusion . However, the researchers from Germany and Norway point out that their study results have not yet been subjected to a "peer review" by other scientists, and it is therefore a prior publication . The health expert and SPD politician Karl Lauterbach praised the work as “robust”.

A very (!) Astonishing result, but shown in a robust study. Blood group A about 50% higher risk of severe course Covid-19. Twice the risk as blood group 0. Blood group B in between. Since immune response depends on blood type, this makes sense https://t.co/QFRsfAauc8

Corona Study: Result Could Help Drug Development

The study could help with the development of a drug * . After all, it reveals which human genes could favor a serious course of the disease .

While people with blood group 0 are less exposed to the risk of a more severe illness in malaria , blood type A is better protected in the case of the plague .

We also keep you up to date on the numbers of infected, deceased and recovered people in Germany and other countries. Virologist Christian Drosten revises his corona study and attacks his critics at the same time.
