The Boxer Club's Isar Loisach Group has its quarters in Gelting. Chairman Bernd Füger explains why there is a separate dog sports club for this breed.

Gelting - Sunday is "Dog's Day". Just in time for their day of honor, "Aimy", "Xandro", "Fila", "Kringel" and their friends can train again after the corona-related forced break - albeit with conditions.

Preparation for "dog driving license" for the owner

The four-year-old "Xandro" is waiting for the next command of his master Sebastian Helmer on the club meadow in the "seat". At his hand signal, the male runs, jumps over an obstacle and brings a toy placed behind it. As a reward, he gets a treat. Helmer prepares Xandro for the International Working Dog Exam (IGP), for which the boxer must be able to retrieve, trace a track and run 20 kilometers alongside the bike. The pretty brindle with the white breast has already successfully completed the companion dog test, a kind of "dog handler license" for the owner.

Individual training is not a problem with regard to the risk of infection with the corona virus. Two or three people can also practice the so-called submission or protection service on the spacious club square. The second chairwoman Marion Schemmel shows Heidi Janz how she makes her “Opra” run exactly “on foot” - namely with clear body language, a lot of positive confirmation and a treat for good performance. "We only work here with motivation and praise," says training manager Claudia di Camillo. There is nothing more than a sharp “No!” Or “Fug!” As a punishment.

Building bonds between humans and animals

In principle, the Boxer Club Isar-Loisach works like any other dog school. The most important thing is to build a bond between humans and animals, says chairman Bernd Füger. Based on this, "Place", "Come", "Stay" and all the other commands would work. Because the club is called the dog sports club, its members take part in competitions such as the international working dog test in addition to training the dog. In the past, some members had made it to the German Championship with their four-legged friends, reports Füger, who has lived with boxers for 33 years. It goes without saying that his current bitch "Aimy" listens to his word. The chairman considers this extremely important. There are more and more dogs in Germany. If only a few of them were ill-bred, for example if they attacked other people or were poaching, then it would fall back on all owners - and that would be a shame.

One of the oldest German breed dog breed clubs

But why are there separate clubs for the German boxer? In Bavaria there are ten groups under the roof of the Boxer Klub (BK) based in Munich. "The Boxer Club is one of the oldest German breed dog breed clubs, which is dedicated to the breeding of stable and healthy animals," says the homepage of the BK. The compact guys with a loyal look are special representatives of the genus canis lupus familiaris.

The "bull biter" or "Saupacker" are considered to be their immediate ancestors. They were bred by hunters to grab and hold the game driven by the herding dogs until humans killed the prey. For this task they needed a mouth as wide as possible in order to bite properly. In order to offer little attack surface themselves, their ears and tail were previously cropped, which has been prohibited in Germany since 1987 and 1998 respectively.

German boxer is a family dog

Today the German boxer is a family dog. "He is extremely fond of children, can put up with a lot, but he also guards his people," says Zuchtwart Dr. Eva-Maria Muscholl. She advises and accompanies members if they want to raise puppies. "He is the clown among the dogs", Bernd Füger describes the curious, playful and courageous companion on four paws. As a protective or police dog, it is only suitable to a limited extent. The boxer club Isar-Loisach is training for the protection service anyway, because grabbing and tugging is the essence of the boxer, explains Füger.

Sebastian Helmer puts on a thick arm protection during his next exercise with "Xandro". The male jumps up on his master and snaps playfully for the upholstery. "This is not to make the dog sharp. He can live out his play instinct. And you can tell whether he is fearless, ”emphasizes Füger. A clear “out” from Helmer puts an immediate end to the fun.

Founded in October 1975

In the 1970s, the boxer was very fashionable. The Isar-Loisach Club was founded on October 22, 1975. In 1989, those responsible leased the site on Leitenstrasse. The members - around 170 at the time - built the clubhouse themselves.

Today the club has around 50 members, including a dozen active. 99 percent of them are boxer owners, but other breeds are also included. And what does the typical boxer owner or master look like? “We are fun, sociable, agile. We don't take everything so seriously, ”says Claudia di Camillo. A very special blow, just like their partners with the short snout.
