Has the German heat record of 42.6 degrees never existed? Dominik Jung seems to be victorious in the dispute with the German Weather Service. The DWD admits shortcomings.

Has the German heat record of 42.6 degrees never existed? Dominik Jung seems to be victorious in the dispute with the German Weather Service. The DWD admits shortcomings.

  • Graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung started a dispute with the German Weather Service (DWD) .
  • Weather * expert Jörg Kachelmann has long accused the DWD of the same.
  • Now the weather service seems to have buckled.

Update from June 7th: The next attack on the German Weather Service. In a video for wetter.net, expert Dominik Jung again criticized the DWD. A viewer had sent him photos of the controversial DWD measuring station in Lingen (NRW). The qualified meteorologist immediately recognizes from the pictures: Something is wrong here! Now it is clear why the station measures "five to six degrees" higher values than surrounding weather stations.

On the one hand, he criticizes the high growth around the measuring station: "The hedges should be much further away and cut shorter," says Jung. On the other hand, he sees the location of the station as problematic. He recognizes a  “bathtub effect” , the sun is popping into the depression in which the station is located.

According to criticism by weather expert Dominik Jung: DWD admits mistakes

The German Weather Service apparently now sees the error. A press release on Friday said that the station in Lingen would be relocated "as soon as possible" . The DWD's technical director, Klaus-Jürgen Schreiber, said: “The first construction measures at the new location in Lingen-Baccum have started. We hope to be able to open the new measuring field in spring 2021. "

From Saturday the DWD will no longer publish temperature measurements and other meteorological data from Lingen until the station moves. The striking differences in measurement should be scientifically clarified. Schreiber: “The quality of our measurements has top priority. We decided not to publish the observation data of the Lingen station anymore, but to only use it internally for scientific tests. ”

DWD relocates weather station #Lingen, analyzes temperature measurement there. Klaus-Jürgen Schreiber, DWD technology board member: "The quality of the measurements has top priority." Even German temperature record of 42.6 degrees Celsius is checked. After a systematic analysis of the measurement data , the DWD will decide whether the German temperature record of 42.6 degrees Celsius measured in Lingen on July 25, 2019 needs to be corrected . For this purpose, comparative measurements with a second sensor are currently being carried out on the site of the station.

Controversial DWD temperature measurements in Lingen: "The station simply has a problem"

Update from June 4, 11:28 am : The DWD weather station in Lingen (Emsland , North Rhine-Westphalia) does not come out of the firing line because of its measured values. The climatologist Dr. Karsten Brandt now said: "The station has just one problem." Because it reflects only the "local extreme microclimate" that we should take them out of the rankings, he told  Bild.de .

With “Ranking” he referred to the fact that on June 2 the DWD reported the “hottest day of the year so far” for Germany with a value of 30.7 degrees in Lingen. In addition to the weather experts Brandt and Dominik Jung (see update from May 28th) , ARD specialist Karsten Schwanke now expressed considerable doubts about the measuring station.

"Sorry, but to look back at Lingen - after the justified reviews of the past few days - cannot be dismissed as 'mistake happening'. That is absolute ignorance and unprofessionalism. You can also correct retrospectives. And strike records. For more credibility, ”he tweeted. The measuring station should not be the focus of the weather analysis, he continued.

Kachelmann and colleagues raise serious accusations against weather service - it is now turning around

Update of May 28, 2020:  The allegations that weather expert Dominik Jung from the Q.met weather service publicly speaks to the German Weather Service (DWD) have it all. Accordingly, the weather station in Lingen in Lower Saxony - which had caused a stir among weather experts last year - is to provide highly controversial measurement data.

Dominik Jung recently told the “Bild” newspaper that the weather station in Lingen was in a depression, surrounded by hedges, a parking lot and an outdoor pool. "It is dubious that the DWD even allows such a weather station. Apparently the heat builds up there. The station should be relocated. This makes the DWD particularly vulnerable to global warming when it presents unreliable measurement data . "

Even Dr. Krasten Brandt , a colleague of Dominik Jung, agrees with his explanations regarding the weather station in Lingen. So the station had the problem that it was lying in a hollow and the temperatures were heated up a lot. "This is definitely not the warmest place in Germany," he said.

And apparently there is now a real turning point. As Uwe Kirsch , press spokesman for the German Weather Service, confirmed to the “Bild” newspaper, they wanted to relocate the station. However, the time period remains open. "Archaeological artifacts were discovered at the new location nearby, which unfortunately further delays the matter," said Kirsch.

Our first report from May 21, 2020:

Offenbach - There are violent allegations that weather expert and qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung from the Q.met weather service has made against the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach . He publicly denounces the way he works: "All of this can not be described as representative and has nothing to do with a serious measurement," says Jung. At the center of his criticism is a problem that weather colleague Jörg Kachelmann has long drawn attention to.

Weather dispute: Meteorologists Kachelmann and Jung attack German weather service

The summer days, which are officially called this from 25 degrees and already delighted many people in May, are now the reason for the clinch between Jung and the DWD. According to the DWD's measurements last weekend in May (May 9 and May 10, 2020), the peak values averaged 28 degrees on both days. According to Jung, however, these values are highly controversial. They come from the weather station in Lingen in Lower Saxony. This caused a great stir in the weather among experts last year. In addition to the weather portal wetteronline.de, there was also criticism from weather expert Jörg Kachelmann.

Weather dispute: Jung accuses DWD of unreliable measurements from the weather station in Lingen

The highest value measured by the DWD in the Lingen weather station last summer and the new Germany record of 42.6 degrees was far higher than that of other weather stations. The value was therefore neither recognized by wetteronline.de, which according to the NDR described it as "unusable" and "unacceptable", nor by Kachelmann. The general opinion among experts is that the weather station in Lingen does not qualify for adequate temperature measurement. There is too little wind there * and the heat would build up due to thick hedges and tall rows of trees.

The federal authority then went to the defense and DWD spokesman Andreas Friedrich told the NDR that both the measuring technology and the environment  had been checked. All conditions correspond to international standards , says Friedrich. Weather expert Jung still holds on to his doubts: “At that time, the German Weather Service said that the location and the measurements were OK. You have to question that again after this weekend. ”All weather stations in the Lingen area would have measured values up to four degrees below the Lingen value. He therefore calls for the weather station to be relocated, as the DWD has been planning since 2014.

It is remarkable. After the station has been relocated, there will never be a heat record in that area, it will also last for a long time because there is no comparable station that is located in such an unventilated hollow.https: //t.co/t5Dlxcf8SO# Lingen #record heat https://t.co/tI02dM6gp0

How will the weather in Germany be on Father's Day? The outlook is pretty sunny. A meteorologist also made a clear announcement. At Pentecost, however, a "spoil-game" low could ruin the holidays. First the temperatures in Germany drop, then extremely humid weather followed. This can cause numerous thunderstorms and flash floods.
