But what exactly is a real water tornado?

The Observatory pointed out that a water tornado is a column of clouds that rotates rapidly and contains water droplets. The bottom of the convective cloud is connected to the water surface. The water tornado is generally lower in speed than the tornado on land. It is also commonly known as the water tornado can sometimes suck up water "Dragon absorbs water".

There are two types of water tornado

There are two types of water tornadoes. The first type is the more common water tornado. It occurs in relatively good weather and has no direct relationship with thunderstorms. This type of water tornado usually occurs under the rapid development of thick cumulus clouds. The Observatory quoted research that pointed out that after the convective cloud downdraft reaches the sea surface, it will spread outwards and cause cold outflows. However, such water tornadoes have short life cycles and moving paths, which generally do not last more than 20 minutes; when they land on land, they quickly dissipate and rarely penetrate inland.

As for the second type of water tornado, it is usually related to violent thunderstorms. They are accompanied by severe weather such as strong winds and hail, and sometimes move to the sea after developing on land. Unlike the first type, this type of water tornado develops from top to bottom within a thunderstorm. At the initial stage, a funnel cloud will appear first, and then gradually extend to the ground or the sea.

Which area of ​​water tornado is most common?

In Hong Kong, water tornadoes mostly occur during unstable weather from May to September. Between 1959 and 2019, 39 water tornado cases were witnessed in Hong Kong.

Among them, within June 2018, a total of three days received water tornado reports, two of which occurred in the waters near Changzhou.
