(CNN) - Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor announced his retirement from the sport on social media this Sunday.

The former UFC two-division world champion said he is retiring from fighting in a statement posted to his verified Twitter account on Sunday morning.

"Hi guys, I've decided to withdraw from the fight," says the tweet. “Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a journey it has been! This is not the first time that the mixed martial arts star has announced his retirement on social media.

The controversial Irish fighter, whose nickname is "The Notorious," announced his retirement from the sport in March 2019, but returned to the ring earlier this year to fight American Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He beat Cowboy with a technical knockout after 15 months of retirement.

And in 2016, he tweeted: “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. See you later".

'It is in my blood to fight'

The fighter, an explorer in training, is considered one of the best in the UFC.

He even moved from the mixed martial arts octagon to the ring to fight boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.

McGregor was defeated in the tenth round by the champion, going beyond what many thought.

The fight cost him his light and featherweight belts and ended with his right to brag as the only fighter who simultaneously holds two UFC titles.

In a previous interview with CNN, the fighter commented that part of his success is due to the legacy of his family.

"The McGregor name is historic when it comes to combat," he said proudly. “A long time ago, I studied the name of my family, I studied the inheritance of my family. We were a feared clan. At one point, the name McGregor was punishable by death. It is in my blood to fight, and that is all. It is what my ancestors have been doing long before me, "he added.

In 2019, McGregor's fighting spirit led him to a great fight after his fourth round loss against Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Both fighters received sanctions and McGregor received a six-month suspension and a $ 50,000 fine. His opponent was fined $ 500,000 and was suspended for nine months for his part in the fight.

McGregor leaves the sport in eighth place on the pound for pound list of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
