Wolfratshausen - For a good three years now, the comedian Julian Beysel from Wolfratshausen has been doing his best to make people laugh with stories from his everyday life. In Corona times, however, this is not exactly easy. In conversation with our newspaper, the 28-year-old reveals what solution he has found and why his career is particularly linked to the Geltingen ambush.

Mr. Beysel, can you still remember your first joke on stage?

Oh yeah. It was terrible. (laughs) I used facial expressions and gestures to depict a bear with an identity crisis.

But that didn't deter you from going on?

No. The first few appearances as a comedian are actually always bad. It takes a while to develop a feel for the stage and the audience.

How did you get into comedy in the first place?

Seven years ago I moved to Munich for work. My buddies opened an open mic there. In other words, a stage that gives young comedians the opportunity to present their program to an audience. I owe in part to my girlfriend that I really dared to take this step.

Why?

I just met her at that time. I wanted to prove to her that I can do it. I always wanted to perform on stage. But I don't think I would have dared if she hadn't tip the scales.

Do you or your friends try out your programs?

No, never (laughs). Most of my friends perform themselves every now and then. Then when I try to pretend jokes, ideas or stories to them, they notice it immediately.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

At work, in private life - actually in every situation. That's what I like so much about stand-up comedy. Every situation has an added value because at the same time you consider: what could I do with it?

What is good stand-up comedy?

It is primarily about everyday situations. In addition, this type of humor is not classically designed for jokes. I tell stories from everyday life, peppered with punch lines so that it doesn't get boring.

But you probably can't appear at the moment?

No. Because of Corona, all appearances fall flat. But you can always see me in the new Smyle app (see box).

What exactly can you see on this app?

There are various videos of me in it: sketches, small snippets of my performances, for example on the Geltinger Kulturbühne ambush. And there is always something new.

Do you have a place where you absolutely want to appear?

The thing is: I've already played the "ambush". That was my ultimate goal. My mother used to work there. I grew up there, so to speak, watched a lot of bands and cabaret artists. As a child I didn't understand everything the comedians said, but I thought it was pretty cool even then. I really wanted to be up there myself. Performing again in "ambush", an entire evening as the only artist, is still a little dream.

What can you really do wrong as a comedian on stage?

Just make others down all the time. That is not how it works. You need a balanced mix and sometimes you have to criticize yourself. Therefore, the most important thing for comedians is not to take themselves seriously and to be able to laugh at themselves. I don't know the feeling of embarrassment anymore.

Speaking of feelings: how does it feel to be on stage and to see the whole audience laughing?

This is such an unnaturally great confirmation that you would never get otherwise. As a comedian, you always like to take the risk that you will not arrive at the audience. If you talk for ten minutes and there are no reactions - it couldn't be worse. But if things go well, there is nothing better.

Where did you have such a great moment?

Funnily enough, also in "ambush". Pretty much every punch sat there, I didn't mess up and didn't forget anything. The performance was perfect. This feeling when everything works is indescribable. That's why I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to get on stage a bit. Don't think about it for long, just dare.

Info:

The free app Smyle is now available in the app store or on Google Play.

The Kulturbühne Hinterhalt has now also found a solution for its concerts: a concert was recently broadcast live on the Internet - a concert premiere, to be precise. The response was huge.
