BEIJING - SANA, China today called on the United States to honor its obligations to halt nuclear tests under a treaty

Beijing-Sana

China on Monday called on the United States to honor its commitment to halt nuclear tests under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

China urges the United States to fulfill its outstanding obligations and fulfill its commitment to halt nuclear tests under the treaty, Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunyang as saying at a press conference.

China supports the declaration of the group of eminent personalities of the treaty, which is an important pillar of the international nuclear arms control regime, which has set the ban on nuclear tests as an international standard, Hua said, adding that the treaty is of great importance in promoting nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and protecting global peace and security.

The group of prominent personalities of the treaty recently issued a declaration expressing its concern about the discussions conducted by American officials about the possibility of resuming nuclear tests and affirmed that if the American side does this, it will seriously undermine the global standard for "halting nuclear tests" and harms the mechanism of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

The group also called on all countries to reaffirm their support for the treaty and take concrete measures to ensure the treaty enters into force at an early date.

Hua stressed that China urges the United States to fulfill its obligations due and fulfill its commitment to suspend nuclear tests and protect the purposes and objectives of the treaty. "We also hope that the United States will respond seriously to the appeal of the international community and do more things conducive to international nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation," he said.
