The Republic on the March (LREM) party announced that it would join Tuesday in the international tribute to George Floyd, a black man whose death by asphyxiation has provoked demonstrations in several countries against racism and police violence. The presidential party "will join in the international tribute that will be paid to him" before his funeral on Tuesday in Houston, at 6 pm Paris time, "by observing 8 minutes 46 seconds of silence in his memory" .

"If the situation in France is in no way comparable to that of the United States, we must hear the cry of anger expressed by a large part of French youth in recent days to denounce racism, hatred and any form of discrimination and violence, " said the political party of Emmanuel Macron in a press release. "To hear this cry is to refuse denial but also the instrumentalizations that can be made of it and to oppose amalgams which would amount to saying that our institutions and our police are racist" , underlines the party.

“All manifestations of racism and violence in the police must be firmly condemned and punished, as the Minister of the Interior (Christophe Castaner) recalled , but are in no way representative of all the forces of the "order that do remarkable work extremely difficult on a daily basis and to which LREM would like to express its gratitude," added the movement, which welcomes the minister's announcements in this regard.

Christophe Castaner notably advocated on Monday a "zero tolerance" of racism in the police, whose suspension will be "systematically considered for each proven suspicion" in the matter. President Emmanuel Macron, who has so far not spoken on the death of George Floyd, had asked the government to "speed up" in this matter.
