The two arrested persons are a 16-year-old boy and a 52-year-old woman, who are relatives. The police conducted an arrest operation this morning and seized different chemical raw materials, including large amounts of hydrogen peroxide, acetone, strong acid and other oxidants, in two residential units of more than 300 feet and 500 feet in Wan Chai. Li Zhanchao, the director of bomb disposal in the Explosives Disposal Division, said that these chemical raw materials can be made into different types of homemade explosives, some of which may produce a firework effect, and some may be explosive grades, causing injuries.
Li Zhanchao pointed out that some chemical raw materials can be legally possessed, but the police seized more than 10 pieces of hydrogen peroxide. He believes that unless there are other purposes, an ordinary family does not need to store a large number of different types of chemical raw materials. He also pointed out that in the past year, many cases of homemade explosives also seized the same chemical raw materials as this case.
The police pointed out that the scene was a residential unit, and the explosives were distributed in different locations in the hall. Some chemicals were in an indefinite state, and were stored in styrofoam boxes to prevent collisions. At the same time, the police seized laboratory equipment, including solvents and glassware, which were estimated to have chemical effects when they were homemade explosives. Li Zhanchao reiterated that self-made explosives are very indefinite chemicals. The process of self-preparation or its nature is flammable. If an accident occurs, it will cause a fire or explosion in the residence, and the behavior is not responsible for the residents of the building.
Police Superintendent Zou Xiang of the Drug Investigation Division said that the seized chemical raw materials and the use of imitation firearms are the direction of the police investigation, and do not rule out any possibility.
Zou Xiang pointed out that it is easy to browse the information on making explosives on the Internet, and some people feel that they can make explosives according to the method. Zou Xiang reminded the public that the manufacture or possession of explosives is a serious crime under the Crimes Ordinance, Chapter 200 of the Laws of Hong Kong, and the maximum offense can be imprisonment for 14 years.
Zou Xiang pointed out that one of the arrested persons was only 16 years old, and called on parents to pay attention to whether their children are abnormal every day. If they find out that they are buying or handling chemical raw materials, they should notify the police or seek assistance as soon as possible.
