British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab spoke with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on June 8. The British Foreign Office later issued a press release stating that Lan Taowen had expressed to Wang Yi during the call that the British side was deeply concerned about the Hong Kong version of the National Security Law.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation with British Foreign Minister Lan Taowen on June 8th. The picture shows that Wang Yi hosted a press conference (AP) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on May 22nd

The British side listed three points in the press release. The first is Lan Taowen talking with Wang Yi to discuss the relationship between China and Britain.

Secondly, a British Foreign Ministry spokesman said that in relation to Hong Kong, the Foreign Minister has outlined the British side’s serious concerns about China’s proposal to implement the Hong Kong version of the National Security Act. The obligations to international commitments under the statement remain consistent.

Third, the press release mentioned that the two sides also discussed how Britain and China can cooperate in areas of common interest, including environmental change and trade. The British also said that Lan Taowen welcomed Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s participation last week hosted by the British Prime Minister Johnson Global Vaccine Summit.

After this call, the Chinese Xinhua News Agency quoted Lan Taowen on the phone as saying that the British side is willing to carefully consider the content of the exchange with Wang Yi and continue to communicate with the Chinese side in a spirit of mutual respect.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Wang Yi emphasized in the call that he will never accept the unfounded accusation that the so-called national security legislation will change "one country, two systems", and urges the British side to respect the Constitution of the People's Republic of China and the Basic Law enacted in accordance with the Constitution, and respect China's protection of national security on its own territory. Legitimate rights and respect for the governance of the Chinese Central Government against Hong Kong under the "One Country, Two Systems" side, the British side must adopt a cautious and cautious attitude in this regard.
