Caution is advised! Kreissparkasse customers have been confronted with fraud attempts in recent weeks. The stitch is not new.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Peter Lingg raises the alarm, even switched on the police. When the chairman of the board of the Kreissparkasse Garmisch-Partenkirchen takes such a step, there is increased attention. Bank customers have been confronted with fraud attempts in the past few weeks. "I know of four or five cases," says Lingg. The scam is not new: unknowns try to call for personal data by calling, but are not looking for an account. “The good thing is that no damage has been done to our customers so far,” says Lingg. "But the activities of the fraudsters are becoming increasingly aggressive and sophisticated."

The procedure is described in detail by Joachim Späth, Head of Media Sales at Sparkasse: Customers would actually be called with the number of the local Sparkasse that appears on the phone. "This makes everything more credible, since many customers know the number of their branch," he emphasizes. The problem: “When the Sparkasse calls, customers tell almost everything.” And that shouldn't happen. Späth's advice: "You always have to say that my bank actually knows everything." Because once the data has been revealed, the strangers contact the financial institution and pretend to be a supposed customer who, for example, is looking for new access data online banking or a new card sneaks up. "Then money is usually transferred very quickly to third-party accounts."

Employees well trained

In the present cases, the Sparkasse customer advisors quickly realized that it was not the real account holder. In one case, the fraudster even presented a fake registration certificate for a move. "But the employees are very well trained for these cases," emphasizes Späth. "Otherwise the door would be open to the system."

Späth advises customers that they should always be suspicious of telephone calls without an agent's extension or of e-mails asking the account holder to provide data or open attachments. "You'd better hang up, call the bank and inquire. We would never ask for personal information over the phone. ”

The Sparkasse has also set up additional protection: "We have decided not to make any telephone transfers without a password agreement with the customer until further notice," Lingg clarifies.
