The number of new deaths related to COVID-19 rose to 53 in Italy, against 71 the day before, announced Thursday the civil protection agency which recorded 379 new contaminations in 24 hours against 202 Wednesday.

The epidemic, since it appeared on Italian territory on February 21, has claimed the lives of 34,167 people in the country, placing Italy in fourth position behind the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil in terms of death. The number of confirmed infections amounted to 236,142, which places Italy in seventh place in the world, behind the United States, Russia, Brazil, Spain, the United Kingdom and India.
The number of people registered as being currently carriers of the disease fell to 30,637, against 31,710 the day before. Among the 379 new infections recorded on Thursday, 252 were observed in Lombardy, the Italian region most affected by the epidemic.
The number of patients hospitalized in intensive care fell Thursday to 236 against 249 the previous day, confirming a long-term downward trend. Among those initially infected, 171,338 were declared recovered against 169,939 the day before. The civil defense agency said that 2,746 million people had been tested as of Thursday, out of a population of around 60 million.
