A 75-year-old woman was transferred in critical condition to Marseille on Thursday after being attacked in the face and throat by a pit bull, in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (Gard), said the public prosecutor of Nîmes.

Before being finally killed, the dangerous dog, who was not on a leash and had escaped from its owner, attacked three women aged 75, 70 and 33, said the Gard firefighters. "When help arrived, three victims were identified and the dog was still not under control and had taken refuge towards Fort Saint-André", which overlooks the historic center, said the firefighters.
Seriously injured, the 75-year-old woman was evacuated by helicopter to Marseille. The other two women, bitten in the legs and slightly injured, were transferred to Avignon. The dog, who had run away, was finally killed, said Nîmes public prosecutor Eric Maurel. The owner was placed in police custody at the Avignon police station.
