Marseille: opening of an IGPN investigation after a tense arrest

A man lost consciousness during an arrest on Saturday June 6. On Thursday, June 11, the IGPN launched an investigation, while the controversy over police violence is in full swing.

The scene took place near the Old Port in Marseille on Saturday June 6 in the evening. A man lost consciousness after being arrested by police in the center of the city.

The person arrested is an individual who was returning from a demonstration against violence committed by the police. The scene was filmed by passers-by and the video posted on Facebook. Witnesses describe " a black man in his sixties who was violently attacked by a police officer, who literally threw him against the corner of a building facade ". Also according to these witnesses, the man was accompanied by his son, they were walking in the street when the keychain of one of them rubbed against the police car. The officers then intervened and arrested the older of the two passers-by.

Police dispute witness version

" The prosecutor seized the IGPN, she made the decision that she should, and the only thing to do now is to wait for this investigation and the decision of the prosecutor, " said the Prefect of Police of Bouches. -du-Rhône, Emmanuel Barbe, for whom " for the moment things are anything but clear ".

" The gentleman in question fell under circumstances which are disputed, " insisted Emmanuel Barbe, adding that according to his information, this man " was very heavily alcoholic and attacked a police car ". The prefect specified that this information should be verified by the investigation.
